I finally took our 3 yr old goldendoodle for her first mountain bike ride last week and it was amazing! She used to have an aversion to bikes but I have been slowly breaking the fear to where she is comfortable being around bikes. She is trained off leash and has excellent recall so I figured we would give it a shot. I went in the middle of the day w/ no traffic and figured we'd take it nice and slow and see what happened. She was awesome! Stayed right off my rear wheel 4-5 feet, stayed on the trail, stayed focus and I didn't need to give her a single command the whole time. The next day when I broke my bike out instead of taking cover she ran to the car, waiting for me to bring her along.

Anyway, now that I know we can do this does anyone have any tips around limits for how much/ how long you should ride with your dog? I feel better now that its cooler outside. We did 4 miles and she never slowed down. Just don't want to push her too hard too soon.

Thanks!

Tip # 1

Go to a NON Mecklenburg Co trail where off leash dogs are allowed, and run as long as you want

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

I tried my 2 year old golden doodle on the trail twice and she was excellent, until she became a bit distracted by walker/ runners. Although she did very well with all but one pass-by of other trail users, I had an encounter that I won't repeat. I think she will do just fine say at Uwharrie where traffic is minimal. I have to agree with Enoch.

Let your dog find the streams and play a bit. Offer water if its been awhile between streams. Hard to say how long and fast an individual dog can/should go. Start slowly and be careful. We did 5.5 miles at a modest overall pace. I think my girl could have done twice that with  more aclimatizing. Do much less distance if it is warm-hot out.

The golden doodles are VERY smart, but like all dogs need to be VERY WELL trained.

Be very careful! Your dog will run till she goes into system failure and dies. Over the years there have been a few crosses placed in the woods from where dogs have died, seriously.
I use to take my dog with me and I learned a few things.
  1) You have to introduce them to milage slowly just like you and I.
  2) Make sure you have a water source.
  3) Cool to cold weather only, below 60
  4) Don't be blind to your dogs behavior, most people are
  5) Everyone does not think your dog on the trail is cool, I love a good trail dog
  6) There is a leash rule on every trail in town
I stopped taking my girl for reasons 5&6 and she is very disappointed to this day. I do ride with her on a leash on the greenways and such every now and then because she loves to run.

The amount and intensity of what dogs can tolerate running with mountain bikes varies by bread.  I and my friends from up in New England always took our dogs into the woods with us for over 20 years.  While all dogs in relatively good health can do well with keeping with runners on trails, bikes are a totally different story.  The impact is not seen initially, but rather years later.  The smaller herding breeds do well, I have never seen a Boarder Colly or Australian Shepard have any problems since they bread to run and heard.  The dogs with the most problems from past experience were the bird dog types, labs and retrievers.  All who ran with their owners on MTB's for any length of time ended up with hip issues later in life..........

Love biking with my dogs.  I liked a lot of the tips above.  Like to see what else people have to say.  Some of my other thoughts:

Trail stuff:
- Bring a leash.  I like to start off-leash once we are 100 yards in, and stop 50 yards short.
- Consider a field collar (remote training collar).
- Bring bags and clean up.  Encourage them to go way off trail, and pick up anything within a few yards.
- Pull your dog off trail when you stop so others can pass easily.
- When you come across something interesting, and you think they may get distracted, keep moving.  That works for people and dogs, too.
- Talk to people you see, helps make everyone more comfortable.
- Be sensitive to other trail users, prob a third are less than happy to see you.

Health & safety
- Learn their behaviors as they get tired
- Temperature control is crucial - so agree 100% with above - stops every 2-4 miles for a short break, always with water, swim stops are great, and 50s and 60s are best.
- Watch for snakes, ferrel dogs, think about hunting seasons.
- Dogs tire much faster at speed than on hills (the opposite of me!).  No big ring.
- Also agree they need to work up to their mileage.  5 miles is a good start.  With lots of regular rides, in good cool 50deg weather, at moderate speeds, lots of breaks, several swims, food and water, you can 2x,3x+ that distance.

posts by bikermedic and vasco are both serious, not to be taken lightly

Really would like to hear what else people have to say.

I watch a dog die at Sherman 6 or 7 years ago (not my dog), Sami had a cross on the main trail just after the roller coast split.  90 degree day and no water. She would wag her tail every time one of her "kids" would come by even though she couldn't move her legs.  The worst day of mountain biking I have ever had.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. My concerns are the same ones voiced here. I didn't want to start taking her until the weather cooled down (along with the traffic). Will likely be a fall/ winter activity at slower pace. I carried her leash, bags, fold-up water bowl, and she has a remote training collar that I clipped to my hydro pack in case I needed it (I didn't). I think we'll just take it slow and see how she develops. Can't imagine how guilty I'd feel if she ran herself to death or inury!

I take my lab to Uwharrie. No leash required. A couple of creek crossing to stop at and cool down. Never had any issue with other users.

That's bad. Would be tough to see that. Always wondered about that cross, never even crossed my mind it was a dog. Honestly thought it was a joke someone put there for running over a snake or squirrel. Sad.

When I come up on someone doing both... I try to run over the dog owner... while avoiding the simple minded dog.

as long as you only infect greenways then our paths will never cross....

PLEASE stay off the technical trails in the Charlotte area...  I primarily ride WWC but have been known to frequent,Sherman, RRT, LKNSP and Fisher Farm.

Creek crossings or creeks nearby are the key if its anywhere north of 50.  Looking forward to it cooling off again and being able to take the dog back out.

I like to take her to "slower" trails that are a bit more technical and don't have as much mileage on gravel roads as opposed to a 20mph blast for long periods of time with a 5 mile gravel road back to the car, etc.  Somewhere like Green's Lick, Kitsuma, or Trace Ridge (all long fast downhills with no water) can be tough on even the fastest dog if you aren't willing to take some breaks or ride slower to let them keep up.

I don't want to seem like too big of a $hithead.  WWC is an extremely dog friendly facility...  I get that... and I love to visit with all the dogs around the center. The trails are, however, are not dog walker friendly... much less Mt-biker/dog walker combo friendly.
Stay off the trails with the dogs...

Correct me if I am wrong, but all the public trails in Charlotte Metro are combined multi use trails.....

I think I will go over on the dog site and bash mountain bikers for a while......

Even in cold weather, a determined dog can run until their lungs burst - so don't assume that cooler temperatures automatically mean greater distances.

Ever hear of the Iditarod? Several of the dogs that did the original serum run ran themselves to death trying to get there.

Like horses, dogs have more heart than people (and more brain than some).

Enjoy your dog, but protect your dog. Try to imagine what he would do for you, if he was on the bike and you were on foot.

I dont have any problems with well behaved dogs. If your dog is comfortable and obedient bring them out. I'm pretty sure they have a leash rule at WWC, but I have seen quite a few off the leash and never had any problems.

Once I came up on two dogs running down the trail toward me. Soon as they seen me they both got off the trail and instantly sat down till I passed. It was pretty sweet.

Just know your dog, not just its physical limits but its mental ones. My lab is too playful. She wants to touch and sniff every one. So she stays leashed and I jog with her.

To add what Enoch said.  Iredell county has the same leash laws as Mecklenburg.  I like well behaved dogs.  Have only ridden with a few that were actually behaved and not all over the dang place.

Be considerate to other trail/park users.  If someone asks you to leash your dog in Iredell/Mecklenburg county, don't get an attitude about it.  We get enough of those kind of dog walkers at Fisher Farm Park.
