Fat Bike on Charlotte area trails?

Print Post
Currently riding a Trek Fuel 8 FS 26" and have been for years now. Looking at picking  up a 29r Hardtail and am wondering if anyone is riding a Fat Bike on area trails instead? I live down the street from Francis Beatty but now that Tri season is over I want to start hitting the WWC and Sherman Branch more often.

Any thoughts?

I’ve been riding an On One Fatty for over a year around town.  You can certainly ride a fat bike on the local trails including Beatty, Sherman and WWC.  Are you looking at any fatbikes in particular?

With the RockShock Bluto fork out now, Salsa now has the Buck Saw full suspension frame and Turner will be releasing their DW Link fat bike, the King Kahn, in the spring so the options are getting better.

Oct 12, Trek is having a demo day at USNWC. They might have their new fat bike out there.

My friends up in New England have all switched over to Fat bikes for the winter from standard bikes with big spikes in the tires.  They love the fat bikes for the snow, but once the snow melts their fat bikes all hang in the garage until the end of November.....

Thanks Guys. I am not sure if the Fat Bike is a good choice or not but would love to ride one on single track to see how it performs.

I saw the Trek Listing for the 12th. This ALWAYS happens to me. I am out of town in Florida visiting my parents and will not be back until Sunday Night unless I leave early. Guaranteed if I plan a week away some really cool stuff will be happening. The Rocktoberfest Half Marathon is on Saturday. That for me would have been an awesome weekend. Running race on Saturday and trying out Trek Mountain Bikes on Sunday. Grrrr

We have sold and stock quite a few fat bikes at First Flight and hear about how much customers love them on the trails all the time. I was blown away by a buddy on his Mukluk with a Bluto in the mountains a few weeks ago. He hammered the ups and downs much faster than he does on his other bike.

Are you guys expecting any Buck Saws to come in ?  I would like to get a look at one of those.

I'll be at the Beatty Wednesday night ride with my fattie.  If you'd like to take a quick spin on it, I can bring some flat pedals.  It's a medium with a 30 to 32" standover

We ordered a large Bucksaw 2 and were told that the first shipment was scheduled for early December and that they would be very very scarce.  Supposedly we have the only one pre-seasoned in all of our reps territory.

Thanks Oskie but I will still be in Florida. I test road a Salsa Rigid today (Mukluk but it  was only in the parking lot and on some grass. I would love to try it sometime though. I work second shift but could do trail work on the weekend now and again.

Some of the guys at Snowshoe are riding the big wheel bikes.
Nashbar has their big wheel bike on sale for $999.00, it is usually $1,999.00. I would like to try one.

So I wanted to give you guys an update from my trip to Florida. I did in fact get a chance to spend three hours on a Salsa Mukluk. I absolutely loved it and while I do not want to spend $1800 on a fat bike I think there are plenty of other options out there in the thousand dollar and under range to where I think I will be adding one to my stable. I think Francis Beatty would probably have me wanting for a front fork but Sherman branch would be perfect for a fat bike. The biggest thing to get used to which did not take long is the fact that the bike really handles well. I rode the same trails on Tuesday on my 26 inch full suspension as I did with the fat bike on Thursday. Maybe it was the novelty of the fat bike but I truly felt like I had a better time and was less exhausted after 30 miles. When it came time to go back to the bicycle shop I can tell you I did not want to give them the bike back. All I can say is if you get the chance to ride one do it. Be careful though because there are enough options out there that you will probably want to buy one.

Here's my 2 cents. Few months ago I bought the Charge Cooker Maxi. I will say it was a nice bike for the money. I paid $1300 for a new one. Bike was nice and not to bad on the heavy side. I rode it a few times at St. Park and will say it didn't like to turn very well. It was like it had a bad push through the turns. Even riding around my yard I could tell it steered a little funny. Not sure if it was the tires on it or what. It ran 10-12 psi. I did ride a Mukluk last week at First Flight last week, and I will say that it steered more like my 29er. Really couldn't tell it was very different at all. And they have quit a bit of an aggressive tire. Loved the way it felt. So much I may end up with one this week. Although the Charge was a blast to ride, I think I will feel more at home on the Mukluk. Either way I smiled the whole time I rode the Charge.

You know your stuff so very curious as to "why"? ....I am getting over the hype/hate of a FB and thinking that a 27.5+ might be the way to go on a new build.

For those of you that are curious about riding a Fat Bike on local trails; Bikesource on Park Road has the awesome Specialized Fatboy for Demo in size Medium and Large. I took the medium out last week at Francis Beatty, Sherman Branch and the Whitewater Center. The bike with pressure set at 8 pounds was a complete blast to ride. I so want one!
