Some of the guys at Snowshoe are riding the big wheel bikes.
Nashbar has their big wheel bike on sale for $999.00, it is usually $1,999.00. I would like to try one.

if they are so much "fun," why the 50% discount?

We have a large Fatboy Expert at the shop for demo.  Ridden it a few times at Fisher and it is fun to ride but soon realized I can't ride it like I ride my full squish 29er. Man, my shoulders were sore after 2 laps and many jumps. Tongue

Can't wait for it to snow. Smiley  (But I say snow on Monday, November 10th. )

What is the attraction of a fat tire bike for riding around charlotte trails? Serious question, not instigating. I think a full squish fat tire bike for bombing down (not riding up) Pisgah trails would be interesting. Seems like a beefy moto-like tire would hook up like crazy and monster truck everything. But for around here, I would like to be learned up on why people are riding them.

I saw this thread and felt the need to add my 2 cents.  I moved here from Long Island NY about 3 months ago.....where fat bikes are HUGE!  They exploded on the scene about 2 years ago.  Cycle Haven on the North Shore of LI may be the biggest fat bike dealer in the U.S.  I came down with a Surly Necromancer Pugsley and it was my go to bike for everything.  Sadly it got stolen out of my rental garage Undecided  I now ride a GT Zaskar hardtail 9er which is more than suffice till I get another fatty.  Reason they are so big on Long Island is not just the winter snow which is a blast.....but the epic beach rides you can put in.  Both North and South Shore of Long Island have huge stretches of beach....much of which is only accessible on a fatbike.  I won't say they are as good as a standard MTB for trails.....but def just as fun.  In fact 'fun' is the main attribute to these things.  It's a totally different feeling than a regular MTB.  Once suspension fatbikes become commanplace......I think riders with them will eventually be too.  I'm looking to get a front or full suspension fatbike for my 40th in two years....and hoping by then the prices drop as production increaes.  This niche is growing rapidly and will become a staple in the scene eventually IMO.
