SWDP proposed work on log skinny

Print Post
Some of you may have noticed the log skinny on the right side of the trail near the start of the loop? It's pretty sad looking, and the beginning of it is crazy skinny, bumpy and crooked. Personally, I suspect very few folks are capable of riding it, and those who could are not likely to be riding at SWDP much anyway.

I would like to install some slats at the beginning of it. It would still be a challenge, but at least you could get started on the thing. I measured the existing log and it's about 40 feet. My thinking is to install slats on the first 10 feet or so.

Eric and Tom may want to weigh in here... just wanted to check to make sure no one had strong objections.

Thanks.

PS: I have attached a pic of the skinny as of today.

It has my approval. Let me know when you plan on doing the work - maybe I can meet you out there. We will have to have a leaf blowing debate soon.

P.S. I've ridden the first part of it. Not on purpose - as soon as I realized what I was doing I bailed early. Try doing it that way, it helps.

Lol... yeah, see pic below. Trail is pretty hard to find! But personally, I don't think blowing or raking is worth the trouble.

It's worth the trouble to keep the drains clear and keep down trail creep/keep people on the trail. Smiley  I know from 11 years of doing it at Fisher.

Thanks Cycle Path! I approve of this. Just let me know when you plan on getting that done out at SWDP and maybe I can stop by and say "hello." The amount of support you have shown the trail has been overwhelming.

Yeah that makes sense, and I would say the drain work needs to happen all year.

As for trail creep, at Fischer I'm sure that's important... at SWDP? Traffic is so low, just keeping the trail defined is a challenge!  Cry

PS: I do believe Trekker is expecting you to blow leaves there!  Smiley

First, I'd like to say thank you for stepping up and taking care of SWDP!  It's difficult to find people willing to take on that kind of commitment.

Second, you have whatever financial and material resources support at your disposal from the club.  So if you need materials for features and/or tools to repair and maintain the trail, just ask.

I was offering some advice because I've made a lot of mistakes and learned from them.  I was trying offer that knowledge with my advice.

So if I come down to SWDP and blow off the trails you'll come up to Fisher and clear the drains? Wink

How many leaf blowers do we have?  Would not be to bad to walk the trail once with a leaf blower.  Ill try to round one up and get over there one day.

Decking the beginning of that skinny may work but you won't really know until you try to put the first screw through.  If the screw grabs and pulls tight you will be fine.  If the screw just keeps turning and strips out then the skinny is to far gone to save.

Guess its time to buy another power tool! I'll pick one up tomorrow and have it at the shop for you to pick up.
And if you need any PT lumber or fasteners to build a new one, let know too.

Weather permitting, I am hoping to work on it this next weekend. I figured I would buy the PT lumber and screws and submit the receipt as a donation.

As for the leaf blower, depending on time, I could maybe make my way up there to borrow it this weekend too if Doc doesn't.

Thanks all!

Many hands make light work so... Pat - What day/time this weekend did you want to work on the skinny? Tom - Can you borrow two and we'll start at opposite ends of the trail, and meet somewhere near the middle. That way the whole thing probably won't take more than an hour or two max and if Pat needs some help we'll be there to pitch in.

Cycle Path - I know bro, I know. And we appreciate it.

I gave Tom A a backpack leaf blower this evening at the Fisher night ride.  2 miles of trail with 2 people and 2 blowers should take you about an hour or less.

The club has about 4 or 5 of them.  We typically try to keep each trail stocked with 1 chainsaw, 1 gas trimmer and 1 leaf blower depending on the wants and needs of the trail coordinator.  All of the power equipment is Stihl because A. They work really well and last a long time and B.Power Outlet of Lake Norman give's as a 10% non profit discount on all Stihl equipment. Smiley

Trill Will. #2 is actually the second of two blowers that were purchased for LNSP.  #1 is Stihl at LNSP along with a chainsaw.

Leaves are crazy there. I remember a few years ago visiting SWDP to blow leaves after they were all down. Leaves were well over a foot deep in many sections.

Hey, sorry for taking so long to respond... I was not sure of my schedule until today.

I will be there Saturday (tomorrow) morning. Not sure exactly what time, but probably 10 or so. I should have my son helping me, but if you guys are there for leaf blowing you can come by and help or just check the work.

I might try to to deliver materials today if I can get away early.

So I worked out there most of the day today for better or worse. The first 10 feet are now slats that def help getting started on the skinny. I had some extra boards and attached them to the middle section of the log lengthwise. Not sure about this part of the work... easy to remove if we decide to. I also want to work on the entry ramp.

After doing the work I tested it out... managed to pop a tire bailing on the last bit! Had to drop $50 at Bicycle Sport this evening on a new tire... grrr.

Anyway, the log is still interesting... 40 feet long with a tree at the end that comes close to your handlebar on the uphill side.

PS: I saw no leaf blowers.  Wink
