It's back and under the direction of Pisgah Productions (the people behind PMBAR, Monster Cross, Double Dare, Pisgah Enduro, Pisgah 111/55.5k).

XC race action followed by a night downhill event (with as many as you can fit in shuttled practice runs).

XC will have beginner, sport, expert, single speed and big bike (13 inches total travel, flat pedals, and >35 lbs) categories.

The night downhill will offer beginner, sport, expert and hard ass (full rigid) categories.

Lodging is available on-site at Fontana Village and they're giving discounts for the weekend.  Get away from it all (no cell coverage) and join the party that breaks out into a bike race (when it has to).

you'ns that have done this before....

Any place nearby to throw up a tent and slum it after this party/race? I can drive over race day but dont want to get a cabin or condo or whatever for Sat. night. Also dont want to drive back to Asheville and miss "the party that breaks out into a bike race (when it has to)."

Honestly you could prob throw a tent in the front yard of a condo and no-one would care at this place. That being said, me and a few others will prob get a place so if you want a couch hit me up.

I've been to this event before, super fun. Planning on attending this year. In years past cabin rentals were discounted with race entry.

Cabins are 25% off.

The rooms at the lodge are @ $70 a night.

So any of you who have done this race before....it's fun yes? Any opinions? The XC race - not the downhill race (for obvious reasons).

Just asking - "for a friend"  Wink

"Friend" huh?...

$50 for a 100% chance of awesome? Im in...

Dudes at work said its a big party with a bike race somewhere in the mix. I would like to know the course for the XC and DH though... It'd be nice to pre-ride it after taking my morning pre-workout:

The XC Race in years past had different categories, and the XC course went through the DH course. The XC course changes from year to year depending on the race coordinators. IT IS A HUGE PARTY!!! THE DH course in years past wasn't bad, but I am not a DH guy. I would highly recommend going, it is a fun event with fun people. I plan on booking a 3 bdrm cabin, if any local Charlottonians are rolling solo I probably got a spot for you.

To be honest they DH course is pretty lame. It's really only fun because of the events surrounding it and because its at night. I wouldn't bring anything over about 6" of travel out there.  I have only done the XC race once, I remember a fun downhill and a horrible climb right out of the start.

Banjo has the right idea for his pre-ride warm up drink.

The DH course is pretty much wide open double track for the upper two thirds, then there's a tight switchback, some single track, a small'ish drop and the finish.

The XC course should be longer than it has in the past few years.  They planned so late that the couldn't get the permit applications in time to go off Fontana property.  This year, it should go back to the big loop (fun trails) format.

And yes, the XC race has gone right down the DH course in the past, so that should give you some idea of the "severity."  The best part is all the shuttle runs down before the race and then going all out in the dark (and COLD).

Just to add Fontana has several "options" for those being held back by other marital means...or a short trip down to Bryson City for those that partake in 2wheelin' fun. Otherwise, here is an older video takin' straight from the trails of Fontana Village, in which we exited onto HY28 & well, hit 42-46 MPH on our fat & squishy's...that's near the end if you don't have 9 minutes of life to spare...but a good glimpse of the trails

So earlier this week when the weather was beautiful I was thinking to myself hey maybe this race won't be so bad. Might even be downright pleasant. I guess this is what I get.  Undecided

Next time I'm borrowing some flat pedals. Mushy muddy ice and cleats don't play well together.
