I got this Email from the guys over at Industry nine today and thought I would pass it along.

"If you or anyone you know are going to be in the Asheville area this Thursday, we are doing a fundraiser for Asheville Greenways as well as a launch for an Industry Nine labeled beer in conjunction with Ashveille Brewing Co.  We will be raffling off a set of wheels.  Cane Creek will be raffling a DB inline rear shock as well.  "

Details can be found on the event facebook page:

I was not planning on being in Asheville Thursday, but now I'm thinking about it!

I thought the thread was "19 beers, 19 wheels..." Would have been much cooler.

Here's a related question (irrelevant since I don't drink anymore) -

When I was younger (and did drink) I once heard if you were riding your bike home drunk (in MA) you could be arrested and charged. Since NC treats bicycles as a vehicle with full rights to the road - can you be arrested for riding a bike drunk?

Would that be a DWI if bikes are vehicles?

Doesn't that DEFEAT the whole purpose of people finding alternative transportation when they are planning on drinking?

Sorry bro - I don't mean to hijack your thread, the 19 beers thought got me thinking...

I saw a post from Suspension Experts on Facebook that had a picture of the beer bottle.  Anyone know if I'll be able to get a hold of a bottle or three in Charlotte soon?

And yes, to answer your question Trekker1 you can very much get a DUI/DWI/OUI riding a bicycle in most states.  Same goes for a lawnmower, horse, go kart, and related.

Alternative transportation is letting someone sober get you home.  Cab, friend, etc...

I'm sorry - am I the only one who finds it rather stupid that you can get a DWI on a freaking bicycle? Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose? Although, the purpose of a lot of our laws is $... and jobs for failed social workers.

I'd much rather someone try to pedal home drunk than say - "Screw it, may as well take the car."

If you're on a bike who (besides yourself) are you likely to hurt? Sure, you may dent a car door. No innocent victims dead on the road though. Likely you'll pedal home and sober up along the way. If not, you'll probably crash into the grass and sleep it off. The government (even under Obama) doesn't have the right to regulate the ways in which I can hurt myself (if they did, they could pass laws outlawing Mountain Biking - which is dangerous to the rider as well).

We need some perspective here. You can walk drunk. You can pedal along the face of a cliff or down the side of a mountain, dropping off 40 foot ramps - You should be able to ride drunk.

It's a moot point, since I haven't had a drink in 5 years, but it irks me.

Can't walk drunk either. It's called public intoxication.  Me personally, I agree with the law. I'm not in law enforcement but you might guess by my user name what I do.  And I can tell you those laws are needed.  You would be amazed at what I have seen in the last almost 30 years on the job.

Trust me they have tried and succeeded in some places to outlaw mountain biking, dirt bikes or just about anything two wheel related.  While we may not care for Obama care; one good thing about it is they can't refuse or cancel my policy now just because I got hurt on a two wheeled vehicle. They could and have in the past. Heaven forbid if you were hurt at a race and they found out.  Several years ago I had a compound fracture and had to tell my insurance company I fell while I was running.  Don't think they believed it but they paid for 5 surgeries and months of therapy.  Once I drove my straight drive race van home from Augusta SC with a broken arm so I could clean up and walk into the local emergency room in regular street clothes.  Just my perspective, but you know what they say......and they all stink.

No actually I don't think it is stupid at all. I agree with the law. If you are out on the streets on a bike, drunk as hell you are a hazard to people. I mean really, do you want to be driving down the road and have some drunk ass cyclist pulling in front of you? I know I don't. If you are drunk stay off the roads; whether you are in a car, or a bike or whatever else.

In my experience, you'd have to be doing something pretty damn stupid to get a DUI on a bike. I've witnessed a guy leaving a bar in a hurry, drunk as hell, and crashing in the middle of the road in front of a cop who was tunring into the side street. Dude was being a jerk, refusing ambulance care, and cussing out the cop for stopping.

Still didn't get a DUI.

This is an example of why it SHOULD be illegal.

Do I ride my bike when I know I'm going to have a few extra that night? Maybe.

Back in college a girl on my intramural softball team swerved to miss a drunk dude who staggered out in front of her in a curve. Result? She hit a power pole, was injured and had eye damage. Drunk dude was ok. Until that time I figured the only way you could hurt anyone was driving drunk so I understand the laws for public intoxication. By the way
didn't George Jones get a DUI on a lawn mower?

Yes - George Jones took off on a lawnmower is search of booze and got a DUI.

I dunno. I see the arguments, but I'd still rather have someone drunk on a bike than drunk behind the wheel of a car. But, as screaming knees pointed out (I think) it's not a law that's enforced anyway. I imagine any lawyer could get it thrown out even if someone was charged.

Probably a moot point anyway: I only tried to ride a bike drunk once and made it about 20 feet. I imagine if you are sober enough to keep the bike upright, you're sober enough to ride it.

I got a bottle of the I9PA this evening driving through Asheville on my way home from the in-laws.  Stopped in the taproom and it was only $5 for a 22oz.  My fiancee tried finding it in Charlotte last week as a Christmas present for me but they told her it's only available at the brewery (as well as the fundraiser).
