I wonder who came up with the color scheme for Air Siberia.  At least the air traffic controllers will have no trouble seeing the planes.

I got to fly JAL business class a few years ago from Chicago to Tokyo (12 hours).  It wasn't the 787 but the seats were big and comfy and food and service was great.  The downside is it makes it tough going back to cattle class on future long haul flights.

The winter street scenes remind me a little bit of Winnipeg where I am headed soon for the holidays.

The pics are great.  Thanks for sharing.

All in all, a very charming place.

From what I saw, this place in the warmer weather should really be spectacular. In more ways than one.

In regards to mountain biking or the outdoor sports. This place is so immense and unpopulated outside of the cities, you could spend countless lifetimes and never ride or frequent the same area twice.

Similar to Canada or Alaska, the downside is due to the weather the riding season is short. And of course the remote nature for international travel, which makes it an inconvenient destination for a lot of folks. But then, this somewhat adds to the charm. S7 airlines only runs one flight per week into this place from Hong Kong. Good luck finding a different carrier. Fortunately, S7 is a one world partner, so American/US Airways is affiliated with them.

Another potential downside, the tigers and a healthy bear population.  Smiley

I've enjoyed the pics. Did you happen to notice if one brand or model of vehicle was more prevalent in that area. I know Subaru Tribecas were a big seller in Russia, just wondering what the transportation of choice is for the locals considering the climate. Thanks for posting.

There was a good mix of different vehicles. Some were European, many were Asian. Similar to what you see here.

Due to the proximity to China, I even saw a Chinese make or two. It was remarkably nice and comparable to a Hundai or KIA.

Quite a few jacked up and rodded SUV's. A few pickups. VW's, etc..

I even talked to one guy driving a Dodge Ram pick up. He was out to dinner at my hotel (which had a very good and popular restaurant) with his wife/girlfriend and spoke very good English. He seemed in his mid-30's and some sort of successful business type. I've got his email address and he says if I come back in the summer, he's got a wake boat for touring the local waterways or wake boarding on the Amur river.  Smiley

I believe I saw a Chevy emblem as well. But American makes were generally scarce.

The only Subaru I noticed looked like an Outback. May have been the model you referenced. I'm not sure. It was on the other side of the parking lot.

I saw a couple of what looked like old Soviet models as well. They looked like antiques from a bygone era. But most were driving modern cars or SUV's.

The place was modern and the population well educated. Besides the language and minor cultural differences and of course the extreme weather, it had a remarkably familiar feel to it.

They even had a Harley Davidson cafe/bar/restaurant.

It's in the underground part of a building, downtown, just off the main street. The place was a riot. Everybody dresses like a cowboy or cowgirl, or a 1920's flapper. I asked for a menu and they asked me in broken English if I wanted 'the meat'. I was a little confused. I said 'what is the meat'. The guy says for 500 rubles, from 6pm to 3am we bring you all the meat and vegetables you can eat. It's the only thing on the menu. 500 rubles is less than $10. Smiley

I said, 'yeah, give me the meat'. And the servers kept stopping by my table with slabs of beef, chicken, pork, fresh vegetables and bread.. I sat through about 30 minutes of this and I was stuffed.  Grin It was great.

Oh, you might find this interesting.

'The Doctor' walks 5-10 km a day in 20 below zero between University buildings which are spread out in the downtown area. Did I mention the sidewalks are covered in ice.

You can't keep up..

The only thing I ever saw her eat was a few whole grain crackers and a piece or two of raw salmon.

Bad to the bone. )))

So, one day I go to the small local Russian food market near my hotel.

Nobody speaks English. I do everything I can to describe 'crackers' to these folks and they still aren't getting it.

Finally the Russian lady inside finds some guy that walks up and says 'Parlez-vous français'. I say 'no', I just want some crackers. And I make the shape of a cracker. He understands, tells the lady and she leads me to the back of the store to the cracker aisle.

So I grab some crackers and on the way out I spot the canned and packaged fish. I spot some salmon in a plastic package. It looks smoked or cooked. So I grab it too, and what appeared to be Chinese hot sauce.

I pay in rubles and take it back to my room and put it in the small refrigerator in the room. A day or so later, the Doctor stops by. I open the salmon and discover it's raw. Having no way to prepare it, I'm about to toss it in the can and she protests. She grabs my Leatherman tool off the nearby table and starts slicing it up and munchin' on it with a big grin on her face. I try a piece too. It's like chewing a piece of leather. I accidentally chew some of the skin, and she corrects me immediately.

Apparently, you're only supposed to eat the pink part.

I never knew that. ))

Hmmmmm .....  Just lookin' for a profile or a sly smile with a cossack hat on .... Something to support the "back from the USSR" theme. I don't think the Beatles got much past Ukraine.

Comonnnn .. It's Christmas!  Smiley

No profile.

I bumped into this place completely by surprise. While doing some research on Siberia and the 'Happy People'..   Smiley

20 below zero and a little raw salmon isn't so bad.

I guess some people prefer a warm beach in Thailand or Australia. I get enough warm beach around this place in July and August. ))

You want to know how cold this place gets..

Tomorrow morning at 8am the low temp is forecast to be 32 below zero.  Smiley

Yeah.. Just another day in paradise.

I hope the Doctor has her long johns on and consumes a little raw salmon before heading out for her morning walk.

I read recently it was voted the coldest city on earth of a 1/2 million people.

I understand they cancel school when it gets 40 below zero.
