crank / BB question

ok, going to tear down a bike and clean it up some, looking for advice on cranks/bottom brackets.

The current BB is shot, so the question is new BB or new crankset and BB?

The bike is a stock 05 Enduro, has a shimano hollowtech crankset w/ Octalink XT spline.  68mm shell, 118mm spindle, 50mm chainline.  Would have taken a ES-30 BB.

Does it makes sense to put something better in?  Or just find a BB that fits?  The crank arms are a little cross-threaded at the pedels, functional, otherwise there is nothing really wrong with it.

IF I were to swap it out, what should I look for?

Would I be better off putting in a quality BB?

Do your chainrings need to be replaced too?  If so, it might be cheaper to buy the whole combo new.  The chris king options are nice, but way too expensive.

Food for thought...I bought a cheapie token ceramic bottom bracket off pinkbike and have had good luck with it....but I popped the seals and packed in good grease right off the bat.

Those octalink bb's are sometimes hard to find for less than $25-30 bucks. If the pedals are slightly crossthreaded and if the rings are wearing out... You should be able to fins a brand new 2x slx cranks with a bash that would go nice on your enduro. Should be able to find some for $100-125, maybe even some new xt at $125-150... I'd replace the cranks and bb as a bit and of an upgrade. I can help if you need installing...hopefully a little simpler than last time Wink

Thanks - I just got the bearing set to refit the rear suspension, and a bench grinder that should assist in taking the spacers down 1mm, so I am looking forward to getting this back in good form.  I am thinking about stripping the paint down to the frame and clearing it while I have it apart.  The paint is pretty terrible, blistering along the top tube.  Unless I see a screaming good crankset used, I think I will just stick with the octalink.  Costs are adding up.

also the chainrings are pretty fresh, plenty of good miles left.
