Disc brake pad recommendation/input

I need to replace the brake pads on my commuter and mountain bikes, and would like to hear first hand experience in real world use.
The commuter uses Hayes MX-1's and the mountain bike uses Shimano BR M446 (the rotors are not "resin only")

I typically go direct replacement but thats just me.  Although if you have the fins on your shimanos you can skip those.
