I heard you can't use a dropper post on a 29er because dropper posts are cool and 29ers are lame.

I've ridden both ways for a long time now and when my old Crank Brothers Joplin 3 seat post went out, I didn't realize how much I enjoyed having one. I now have a Specialized Dropper seat post back on my bike and am loving it. I suppose it depends on your style of riding and whether weight is a large concern for you. I have never been overly concerned with weight myself. If I were, I wouldn't carry a backpack and I'd lose a few lb's myself.

For those who may bash using one and have never owned one, don't be so quick to judge. I imagine as long as there are options, people will debate/argue. I for one will never own another MTB with out it unless I decided to take up XC racing.

I love mine. Sometimes I use it, sometimes I dont.  It is nice to have the option.

No no, not quite.  You can have a dropper post and NOT be Enduro.  However you CANNOT be officially Enduro without a dropper post.  Just a quick list of other things you need to be Enduro approved are:
1)  a Carbon frame
2)  Dayglow riding apparel.  I am pretty sure the approved dayglow colors are
-green
-orange
-yellow
-blue
3)  An Enduro style helmet, such as a POC
4)  Knee pads ONLY
5)  One of those little front fenders even when its not muddy.
6)  Bars that are at least 700mm wide
7)  The dropper post as mentioned

There are probably other things on the list, but I forget.

The same thing could be said about gears, suspension, disc brakes, pneumatic bicycle tires...

I guess if you wanna be Amish and choose which century you want to be stuck in, by all means.

I didn't have a dropper on my last bike and have a dropper on my new bike.  It has allowed me to ride certain drops that I wouldn't on my last bike.  If some people consider it cheating or a crutch I really don't care.  At the moment I also don't have the luxury to have 4 different bikes so my trail bike=downhill=xc=free=enduro=beech cruiser=sometimes road bike.  You might not need one, but I don't think you would be disappointed if you get one.

I read the piece in the new Dirt Rag. The concept  seems pretty interesting. Back in the late 80's, I really liked my hite rite. But when that faded away, how come the bike industries start improving  on them back then . Why wait 20 years to bring back an old idea. It should be a simple thing, but there seems to be a lot of reliability issues. And it's even on the most expensive modals. I been checking out some of the cheaper Chinese ones on ebay,  TMARS 419S Remote Adjustable Seat Post, and
DNM Mountain Bike Dropper Seatpost and also Kind Shock ExaForm 861. What would be an issue on a bargin priced one when the supposedly good ones have issues. Heck, the TMARS sells for $88 on ebay, but when I read the reviews, people are saying $60 offers are being accepted. That's the price of a regular brand name rigid post . Almost seem worth checking out

Also on that list of crutches:

Clipples Pedals
Suspension
Remote Lockout?
Larger Wheel Diameters
Smaller Wheel Diameters
Aluminum
Carbon
Titatnium
Aerobars
Knobs on tires
Anything and everything that makes riding more efficient, safer, and arguably more fun.

I have been riding a dropper post for about 4 months (new bike). i will say that it came in handy as I got back in to biking after about 4 years off.  i would drop the post for some obstacles which percieved or real seemed to help.  Now that I am more comfortable on   the bike and the trails, i have not dropped the seat a single time in the past 8-10 rides.

A dropper post on a DH bike might be the absolute dumbest thing you could ever have.

I also dont really see how a dropper is a crutch. Its a tech bit to help riding be a bit more seamless. For those of us that are more aggressive, its a nice thing to have. Especially if you have goods you arent trying to mash when trying to get over the backend of the bike.

That being said- the first 6 months I owned my trance I had a Thomson fixed post. I still rode and had fun. I only found my riding becoming more comfortable with the dropper i recently picked up.

If you like to rip trails to pieces then yes a dropper post if fun  Wink

For me it comes in handy when hitting lips on high speed jumps, manualing sections of trail, bunny hopping, and any time that I'm generally putting a lot of "english" on the bike.

I'd say they're not necessary (I was doing the same things before I had one) but they do open up a new level of comfort when I'm riding aggressively.

I find having one is better on my back too... before I had one I had to ride with the seat lower than ideal for climbing in order to get the most out of drops and jumps.

If you tend to roll over jumps and go around drops you probably wont find any benefit but if you really ride aggressively it's a must have... and of course you dont need one for a real DH bike.  Roll Eyes

I don't use mine too much riding around Charlotte. There's nothing really steep enough or long enough for it to be helpful to me. BUT, on AM trails or anywhere with a long climb followed by a long descent (e.g. Pisgah), or extended technical sections it is sooo much nicer having a dropper post then constantly having to dismount to adjust your seat. The first trip I went on where people had them and I didn't convinced me that I wanted one. Need? No. Absolutely love now that I have it? Yes.
