So i have two newer bikes with Elixier 3 brakes, they are so noisy and howls even when the brakes are not applied.  Anyone else have this issue? is there a fix for the noise?  What type/brand would you recommend?  best bang for the buck or no limit to cost....what are the best brakes for XC and med duty trail riding. Thanks for the input.

Shimano xt's is what I like.  If you are going on the cheap, Hayes are hard to beat.

I'm one of those people that like avid brakes but normally run a variation of x0. If you have metal sintered now try some organic pads. Also most avid brakes can be adjusted side to side as well as the angle in relation to the rotor make sure they are adjusted properly. All avids are noisy when wet but shouldn't be when dry

My experience tells me it's the rotors. Ran some avid rotors for a bit on my shimano slx brakes and they squealed like a pig. Quiet before and after the avid rotors.

I have Avids on my one bike. Slightest wetness they start squealing like crazy. I have shimanos on my other bike and love everything about them. They are silent and just awesome in every way.

So a fix for the noise? Get rid of them. Smiley

They should only be noisy when wet but should go away after the first couple of pulls.  I ran the elixir R for years,  once you have them adjusted and bed in properly they should meet your needs.  My favorite is the XO Trail by far, #2 is Formula T1, #3 are XT's and then lastly the elixir R.  The T1's & XT's are very close to the same in stopping power and feel. The XO's have more power and modulation, never had arm pump with them.  Just got a set of Magura MT8 for the singlespeed but don't have them on yet to give an opinion.

Noisy Elixirs are a common problem, often called "turkey warble" or something similar.

Lots of forums have people posting remedies, but the effectiveness is hit or miss.  Rotor changes help for some people, for others it's new organic pads or tape behind the pads to absorb vibrations.

In my experience a new rotor helped slightly, taping behind the pads didn't help much at all, and nothing I could do about cleaning helped either.  I switched to XTs (and kept the same Avid rotors) and they've been dead silent.

Sram seemed to have fixed whatever the problem was with their new Guide brakes (no longer branded with the Avid name) according to nearly everything I read, and the Force Hydro-R brakes on my commuter are great, but many people swear by nothing but Shimano when it comes to hydraulic brakes.  SLX and XT are practically the same price as each other and I spent $200 on my set of pre-bled XTs.

howling avids is nothing new. sometimes if your really lucky you can clean all the conical washers and use some grease to mum them for a while. Shimanos all the way. XT has the most power.

No matter what kind of brakes you have on your bike, please learn to use them properly. I hate seeing the trail tore up because riders lock down their brakes. If you don't know the trail, slow down instead of panic stopping. Just my 2 cents. I have Hayes on my Kona DH bike and Juicy 7's on my cross country DH bike and haven't had any trouble out of either.
