I actually did this twice with my old roof rack.  One of the impetus to getting the hitch rack.  Both times I got generally lucky.  I was using one of the Thule racks that grabbed the frame with rubber jaws instead of the dropout so the bikes popped out once the wheel straps sheared.  In neither case was the bike or the house damaged.  I do have four dents where the towers used to be.  If you get out of your routine it's easy to do.  Knowing I'm easily distracted, I bought a 1-up!

I always set a patio chair in the carport when I use Terry's roof rack..........this way I gotta get out and move it.

Happened on the way to Tsali one year.  Cutting through a  coin op  carwash was the culprit and not wanting to back up with a camper. Not my buddy's fault I thought it was a good idea. Awful sound. Dented his roof and bent my wheel. You never forget that noise

I drove my bike into the carport two years ago at the condo I was renting. Thankfully like sager I had been using a Thule Big Mouth rack, so the front ratchet strap snapped and the frame pulled out of the clamp.  Bike was amazingly undamaged, but it bent one of the cross bars on the rack as well as the Big Mouth rack itself, put quite a few dents into my roof, and when the bike flipped back (the rear wheel stayed attached) it scratched the crap out of every piece of paint it hit.
