What happens when stupid pig-headed people meet on a trail?

Not enough information.

It's equally possible the biker was attacked or threatened in some manner. I think this is likely since no charges have been filed.

These days I think it's a mistake to assume that a 65 year old woman who may seem on the verge of insanity isn't a threat. Especially one that follows the biker pointing an object at him from a distance.

Clearly there is a feud going on between some trail users, who feel quite strongly that bikes don't belong on trails.

My feeling is, if you're a 65 year old woman, the back country probably isn't the best place to be taking your frustrations out on someone who is most probably much larger and stronger than you are.

This comment was in the comment section;

"Why isn't it being reported that the man was actually 75 years old and was just trying to get out of the way of this raging woman who followed him around, yelling and cursing and threatening him for getting too close to her on the trail? A woman who was on the board in Marin of a group trying to rid the trails of bikers altogether….or so I was told was in the Marin newspaper."

I agree that there are problem bikers as well. They occasionally an appearance on this side of the nation as well.

That doesn't appear to be the case here.

If I'm hiking and a biker approaches, I kindly step to the side and let them pass. It's just not a big deal.

But I have seen bikers traveling too fast for conditions about run over people as well, while wearing a chip on their shoulder.

Not hard to see which direction all this discourtesy is heading.

@InTheBush... Not disagreeing with your comments, and I never meant to imply the biker was completely at fault. But the idea that the he did absolutely nothing wrong, yet ended up being chased by a woman walking the trail does not ring true.

And anyway, bikers should hold a very high standard when it comes to trail etiquette.

Reading a Marin online paper and reading the posted comments (the comments are posts so take it for what its worth) the guy was riding up hill and he is said to be around 75yrs old. An other post states that the lady is on the board of an organization that is trying to ban bikes from the trails in that area, again the comments are posts so take it for what its worth.

That fued has been going on in Marin County as long as MTB has been going on. Didn't realize the cyclist was 75. That lady needs to CTFO.

Here is the story in the local newspaper:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

It could be the woman was looking for trouble. But isn't that a little bit "blame the victim"? She had bruises, cuts and swelling to her head, arm, torso and leg.

My point is that bikers have to take a higher ground to help improve our image on mixed use trails. Even if a hiker is looking for a fight, by getting caught up in that, all bikers lose.

I might be mistaken, but wasn't there a news article not too long ago where a female mountain biker was attacked by an older lady hiking in Marin County?

Edit - nevermind, that was in BC.

To make it even more confusing, there was a mountain lyon that attacked a mountain biker.

I just moved from Cali and I have lots of friends who have been fighting for trail access in Marin and Auburn for years. Lots of bad blood going back decades. Equestrians pushed hard and got seats on city councils and banned bikes without public comment to the point that at one time 98% of all trails in Marin were off limits to bikes. Bikers started to organize and push back. Lots of bad attitude on both sides but to be fair there have been several stories in the Marin IJ that have later proven to be false or heavily embellished. One story about "Rogue Bikers" spooking a horse turned out to be almost entirely made up but the IJ never printed a retraction.

The lesson to be learned for the TTB is to keep up the good work maintaining multiuse trails and letting the hikers know we are the ones doing it. The attitude and general appreciation here is much different than I am used to. I had a hiker ask me if it was ok for her to walk on the trails at North Meck. I said of course, the are multi-use trails, mountain bikers maintain them but we don't mind sharing.

Another thing I noticed is most riders here don't ride with a bell. I ride with one and I find that it is a big hit with hikers who appreciate the warning.

Ok, I'm glad somebody brought up equestrians.

So, I am over at Cane Creek yesterday doing pull ups. I'm not riding. And running a little later than normal.

There are a couple of women sitting in the grass with horses grazing, and a 75 lb. male German Shepard running loose. There are also a bunch of teenagers and young kids playing in the soccer field nearby, and a couple of adults apparently of the same party unloading picnic supplies in the parking lot.

My better judgment says to come back at a better time. But I need to get a few sets in.

As I approach the pull up bar, the two women with the horses get up and gather all their stuff and start moving towards their horse trailer parked nearby. Of course, I'm eyeballin' the big shepard the whole time, but he seems cool.

As they pass, the lead woman mumbles something asking whether I have a dog and keeps going. I say no.

At that moment the teenagers are heading toward the vehicles with the picnic supplies to help carry them to the picnic area and I notice what looks like two small dogs, one of which is a puppy. They are both on a leash.

The woman sees this and mumbles something about the German Shepard not liking other dogs. I'm thinking to myself, so why don't you have the dog on a leash?

As I do my first set, the two women are loading their stuff into the horse trailer, oblivious to their German Shepard which is left alone nearby and is looking increasingly agitated looking in the direction of the other dogs.

The German Shepard suddenly gets in a crouch position and starts moving quickly towards the other two dogs. I see this and start hollering at the dog and the women. They ignore me.

The German Shepard gets to the puppy and starts biting the heck out of it. The puppy yelping the whole time. As I start moving in that direction, the owner finally notices and starts yelling at the dog which breaks off its attack and starts returning. The kids are screaming and the puppy is too.

Well, the puppy seemed fine after he calmed down and the kids started walking on like nothing happened.

So, do they walk over to check on the puppy or at least apologize to the people for what happened? Nope. Do they put the dog in the vehicle or at least put it on a leash. They just start mumbling something about their surprise at their dog attacking a puppy.

I hate these stupid morons.

They think their dog is a cup cake. The reality is they can't control their dog, which is obviously aggressive, and they are too stupid to put it on a leash or at the very least pay attention to what it is doing. In their deluded minds, it is there security blanket against people like you or me. In reality, it is only a danger to small defenseless things like smaller dogs, puppies and possibly even children.

If you see these abominations of intelligent humanity anywhere, kindly be aware or report it to the authorities.

If it attacks me, you wont have to bother.
