Can't decide - I9/Mavic/ King/Crank Bros

I have a pair of 26" on Crank Brothers Iodines on my ASR-5 and i think the rear hub is on it's last leg so I keep pondering new wheels. I have King's on my old hard tail soooo...

My choices are but not limited to:
  • I9 Torch Trails (23m & 1500g)
    I9 Classics
    King Classic
    Mavic ST (19m & 1550g)
    Mavic Enduro (21m/19m & 1650g)
    Mavic SX (21m & 1750g)
    Crank Bros Cobalts (21m & 1700g)

Have you considered just rebuilding the Iodines?
A whole lot cheaper than new wheels and you can upgrade to better bearings.

I have - It's $135 for a new rear hoop + shipping.
I've read they have improved their hubs bearings since this 1st gen wheel. I think it's a $50 rebuild.

Or Crank crash replacement on the Iodines is $400 for a new Cobalt 2/Iodine 2 wheelset.
...which is about the price of a used set of Mavics, etc.

I'd love to support a NC company, but oh that I9 price Sad

I9 Torch, all the way...while more $, you won't be disappointed.  Easy to work on, look good, sound good, made by good people.  Some will argue they're not with the price, but the fact that you're helping to put food on the table of local NC mountain bikers is worth something.

Why not steel the Kings off the hardtail and rebuild them around some rims of choice.

I'm not sure I would invest a lot in the Iodines, from what I hear they are plagued with issues. But they look cool.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

This is hands down, far and away the most important factor when deciding what hub to buy. Loose bearings v. cartridge bearings?, points of engagement? even spacing and whether they will fit your bike... None of this matters!!!!!!!!!!

I always buy based on sound quality... Just close your eyes and grab the most melodic thing you can...

Word has it Paul Components is making a hub that sounds like the intro to Rush's "Tom Sawyer"... Rad

Skip the Crank bros & Mavic. I had 2011 Mavic crossmax and they were awesome, but now I have 2012 crossmax and they suck. I9's all the way.

I can't steal the Kings off the hardtail because it's a v-brake bike.

How about an I9 groupbuy Smiley

+3 or +4 on the I-9's.  Wouldn't give you 2 cents for anything Crank Brothers makes...but that's just my objective experiential opinion talking. Wink

Hope is my vote. Build a whole wheelset for the cost of I9's....I've had several sets of hopes from cc to DH bike and I've never had to do any maintenance - plus the sound is awesome which is really the only thing that matters...

Hopes should be a distant third if value is in the equation... The newer hopes have better engagement than the old anyway...

I9 are great but I can't justify that coin... Avoid Crap bro's like the plague...

The Hope hubs on my SS have been incredible for going on 4 years now.

What is your opinion on Bitex hubs Todd?

What  about Light Cycle Carbon rims with I9 classic hubs?
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the carbon wheel craze, because all i remember is HED and Spinergy from 20 years ago. lol

Doug, I was going to get some bitex but Brandon at BikeHubStore said he had lots of warranty issues with them... If you want cheap Taiwan hubs with great engagement then BikeHubStore has some good, and very light hubs. I have some Koozer hubs from eBay on my gravel bike that are pretty nice engagement as well (6 pawl, like the other Taiwan) that are about as cheap as you can find a set (ebay) ... Only have a few hundred road miles on em yet but nothing to report...

Lack of engagement.  Feels sloppy to me

Like I said my .02

Everyone is entitled to their opinion

Hopes do sound good and I hear they are easy to work on.

You can actually get I9 to lace those to the Torch hubs and their aluminum spokes- the ERD is close enough to not require custom spoke lengths.  At least for the 29er non-hookless and tubulars.

Saw a set of torch 29er carbon hookless in the mountains this weekend.  Looked sweet.
