WARNING bear sighting at BYT

This is no joke.  The plant employees spotted a baby bear near the top of the jump line near the tower yesterday morning.  As you are aware babies usually come with a mother and this can be very dangerous!  Please report any sighting immediately by sending a pm to worker-rider with time and exact location.  You can also contact the plant by calling the number on the back gate at PRP or at the top of the service road.  Be safe out there.

whoa!  wouldn't there be some kind of animal control group that should investigate?  Doesn't seem like a place that a bear should be allowed to live for long, regardless of the potential mountain biker interaction.

I think the plant manager is already in touch with animal control.

I'm not fast, but I promise you if I see a bear while I'm at BYT, I'm getting a KOM... and I don't even use strava.

Billy the plant manager left me a message and told me I wouldn't believe it. This is what he told me when I talked to him this afternoon.. 2 plant workers who were out doing landscaping spotted a baby bear next to the tower and our jobox. He asked me to post up a warning about said bear. I am heading over in the morning to talk with the plant workers and sneak in a ride after the mayors ride/breakfast. I won't to see if they might have it on the tower camera. If I get any more info I will pass it along. I have seen many weird things out in those woods homeless, foxes, coyote, deer, rabid raccoon, owls, hawks and hunters but bears? Now all we need is lions tigers and Rocky oh my!

I think it's pretty funny that everyone is up in arms about a bear in the woods...he is probably wondering what the hell we are doing there!

This isn't the first time black bears have entered our very developed Mecklenburg county.  It is a little surprising that these have wandered in this far.  They probably are following Sugar Creek and have moved on by now.

I would not be concerned about a "baby" bear.......it's the "mama" bear, probably somewhere near, that would concern me.  Bike shop owners..... get your bear bells and bear spray out on display.

The thing that I look at is that while this has raised concerns thanks to a cute little bear cub and that most realize that mom is the real problem, there are a lot of riders, walkers, etc out there that would pass with-in feet of the cub and never see or hear it. Many times riding I've seen deer, fox, dogs and of course our favorite trial feature snakes. Now while I've seen them I have noticed bikers and trail runners go past them and not see or hear them. This should be a wake up call to be more aware of your surroundings, enjoy the ride and take in the sights, there is more to life then getting your best Strava time.
