Have You Ridden Poston Lately?

If Poston isn't part of your rotation - you might want to reconsider. When I first rode this trail 4 years ago, it was a disconnected and confusing mess of sketchy singletrack that just kind of wandered around. Half of it was impassable hike-a-bike stuff. Then I went back a year later and rode with the PASA guys and saw some definite progress.

I went back for the first time in three years yesterday - holy...

Those guys really got their act (and this trail) together. Some of the best maintained and well thought out trail around here. Plenty of elevation changes but you never really feel like you're just grinding along and slogging it uphill for a cheap thrill downhill. The trail flows really well. There are climbs, but nothing exhausting, and the downhills are sweet but rarely white knuckle (there are some chances to jump though - and one or more descents that will check your gut).

I only had time to ride Lake Loop and Laurel Hill but could see how they seamlessly integrated and expanded the old trail. Can't wait to see the rest of the system.

I'm glad I went back - you will be too.

I also hit up Rocky Branch Trail in Belmont today. Not quite as thrilling, but a good substitute while Renni and SWDP get back on their feet and the trails are recovered. Rocky Branch actually had some frightening descents of its own (the lung busting climbs at the END of the trail was, IMHO, a bad choice).

Either way, kudos to all the trail gnomes working on these two gems. Get them in your rotation.

Time to ride the Far West side...

Cool

Sounds like you have fun on the two easy trails =D... on a serious note I ride there all the time since its 10 mins max from my house.  PM me if you ever want company out there!

Either way definitely check out all the loops - I used to only ride Lake > Laurel or start at Soccer and do that through to end... I HIGHLY recommend riding it all the way through; Big Leaf starts out mostly up hill but becomes rewarding at the end!  Also if jumping is your thing make sure to take Spencer Mountain loop (when you get to soccer fields on soccer trail looks like it does a 180, instead go straight up the fireroad and Spencer Mtn Loop is on the left).

I ride Poston all the time. PASA guys make improvements all the time.
The best part is that it drains well and you can ride it when everything else is closed.

Rode Big Leaf and Soccer last weekend (the cut through where big leaf meets soccer is roped off so you pretty much commit to Soccer when you ride big leaf.

What's the mileage on Spencer Mountain loop? It was approaching midday and too darned hot to do it.

Trekker1,

You can cut soccer out by going to the right before it turns into soccer (after the telephone pole stubs you go through) -

Technically this area belongs to big leaf and soccer and is two ways (big leaf exiting towards soccer field and soccer entering from)

In addition to spencer mountain loop make sure you don't miss the back side of big leaf that goes back to laurel - one of the best climbs is there!

Also just so you know, there is a cable across the trail (its there to deter atvs / dirt bikes) at the two way section

Maxim - do you go out there a lot during the week (Maybe we can get up for a ride)?  Poston is my goto trail after work when no one wants to ride (I live close) and I'm trying to get my legs moving.  I usually end up just doing the lake loop 5-6 times since I seem to get hurt @ Poston more than anywhere else!

No need to cut out soccer anyway - flowiest bits of trail in the system. I rode the second half of all the first four loops. Big Leaf had some crazy downhill stuff coming back (even the wuss lines that I took).

Mileage on Spencer Mountain loop?

Deja Vu? is that the right option on Spencer? Couple nice jumps in that section.

I still haven't had the balls to take the canyon gap yet. (left option/exit)

If we're talking about jumps, try the trail starting near the summit of Spencer... so much fun

Shredgnar,

Know that the Owner of the property and the local police are looking for the Poachers who are building and riding illegally on the property adjacent to the Poston Park Spencer Mountain trails.  The area is littered with "No Trespassing" signs and your equipment will be confiscated when caught.  The local trail builders and P&R Department are working to gain access to this area, but the illegal activities are derailing their efforts.

Mods - Please delete any post pertaining to illegal trail building and riding.

Thank you,

jcam
