Question about online sales
05/28/15 at 11:29pm
Print Post
I will some times come across something that is for sale online and I think it's a remarkably low price and want to share it. For example last week I found Kind bars, box of 12, on sale for $1.47. It may even be cycling stuff from time to time.

If it's ok to do so, which forum would that be?

Sometimes you get what you pay for.
Support your local business, they hire your neighbors  and pay local taxes.

Hmm, volume vs margin.  I'll support local when reasonable, but I refuse to pay double to buy from a LBS.  I'm all for supporting LBS's, but MSRP won't cut it in today's economy.  We live in a free market country and the market will decide.  If LBS's stay the course on MSRP in today's online economy, they will continue to see eroded sales.  Hate to be blunt about it, but it's the truth.

I have worked at bike shops for a long time and the issues run deeper than just the shops want a high margin. Mostly there are places on the interwebz that are selling for much cheaper than even wholesale (shimano is a big one) and there isn't much your lbs can do. That being said I had a few loyal customers that were like you but instead would come in and talk to me and pull the page up on their smartphone we would talk about it and try to come to a price that was good for everyone. Sometimes it worked sometimes I couldn't come close but at the end of the day we were at least offered the business first.

This.

I REALLY like my local bike shop owner.  He's a good guy.  And he will give you the best deal he can.  But...  I have told him about online deals I could get before and he couldn't even BUY them for what the big online site was selling them for.  He'd be losing money (sometimes by a substaintial amount) to sell it for the prices I could get things for.  I say let common sense prevail.  If its "close" as in say 10% price difference I will go ahead and purchase from the local shop.  But, if we talking anything greater than that....  Sorry, but money talks and at the end of the day I'm going for the best deal.

As for where to post on the site?  I think you'll be hard pressed to get a green light.  Several supporters of the site are local buisness owners and I would totally respect their decision not to endorse posting competing sites on the site.

That's because they have the sales volume that is high enough, they're able to get product below wholesale.

Again, I'm a big supporter of LBS's, just ask the guys at Ultimate.  However, when you get smacked in the face with a MSRP price on a tire or something similar, it makes it hard ignore the fact there are other channels to buy in today's day and age.

Now, back to the original question.  I think it's best to not poke the bear by promoting or formalizing online prices on this forum.

Like most people here I want to support our local shops, and also like most people here I am not made of money, so price does matter.  So I compromise:  if the shop has something I want in stock or if its a component I will want the shop to install, I will buy it from the shop.  Otherwise if its something they need to order for me, well, I can do that myself and save some money in the process.

As for the OP, I don't think its a good idea.  Unless it is a product that is a) of interest to the biking community, and b) an extremely good deal, and c) done infrequently, many would consider it spam.

I say buy where you want.  If you're not installing it yourself, someone else is going to.  And when it needs replacing under warranty, you may have to go through that process again.  I buy gun parts online as well at local gun shops so I "get it".  Best thing that could happen for the IBD's would be to make online retailers charge/collect local sales tax and manufacturers control pricing.   Some online retailers are already doing this.

A free market is a good idea when everyone is looking out for everyone else.  That, unfortunately, is rarely the case in my experience.  Tongue

I'll still install your online parts, though.  Revenue is revenue and it's another opportunity to build a relationship. Smiley

Hope everyone get's to ride this weekend and don't forget to support the Riverfront Classic at the USNWC this Sunday!  It's one of the club's largest fund raisers!!

Thank you for the responses. I do support LBS (and local craftsmen. Thanks for the wheels Jerry they're awesome) when possible. Honestly, most of my purchases on bike parts are typically used. You guys that love to buy the latest and greatest stuff always have a surplus of stuff that's "new to me."

I do understand the relationship of this site to the local shops and that's why I asked. I respect what they do and appreciate the information I get from this site.

@TCP: That silly $10 license fee prevented me from signing up. I just did the Pisgah 55.5k and there was no extra fee's. $30 covered everything including three fully supplied rest stations (off the record... one may have even had beer).

Do I need an appointment?  Smiley

Anyone who's a regular online shopper probably won't have a hard time snagging deals, but posting on here would be (almost) a slap in the face to the number of local shops who frequent here and support the club.

And for my two cents regarding online shopping: don't showroom your local shop, and don't expect free help for something you bought online.  I buy online quite frequently, but I do the installation myself and if I screw up I fully expect to pay someone to fix it for me.  I still buy local when I can, particularly if it's something that I want to touch or feel or try out (hence, not showrooming), or if I need something NOW.  Charlotte has a wealth of excellent bike shops thankfully so it's not hard to spread my money around.

Shimano stuff can be bought dirt cheap online.  I feel like whatever agreements they have with online distros is screwing local bike shops.  I like the approach brands like Wolf Tooth Components have, where the price is exactly the same per contract whether it's their own store, an online store, or a LBS.

I usually will buy locally if the local bike shop has the part I want/need in stock.  I don't mind paying a LITTLE more to help support.   Usually however if the part I want is not in stock I consider buying online.  I too however do all my own wrenching and would never ecpect a local bike shop help with a problem part bought online.

At this point we're booked out to June 8th.  Give me a call if you want me to save you a spot. Smiley

On the Shimano stuff...oddly enough, Shimano decided the best way to help protect the IBD channel was to narrow the distributor chain to us from over 10-12 distributors to maybe 3 or 4 making it that much harder to source their parts.  Meaning buying direct and getting hit with shipping under a certain minimum which necessitates buying more at one time than we normally do. Tongue  I haven't met one bike shop owner YET that can even fathom how their decision helped the LBS in any way. :|

To nicedart....about 1/3 of that $30 fee for the RFC goes back to the club, FYI. Smiley

I too, get frustrated paying MSRP at the LBS. However, a few other things to keep in mind:

1. You don't pay shipping at the LBS.
2. It's a lot easier to return a part or ask for help with something at the LBS.
3. The LBS is instant gratification - if I want that part NOW (not a week from now) I can get it at the LBS.
4. In case you didn't know - most of the LBSs (Cycle Path included) offer a discount (usually 10% I think) for THTB/IMBA members (which you should be).

I think I'll wait a couple o' months.

Nothing pressing at the moment.

I'll give you week or two's notice. Give you plenty of time to prepare yourself.  Smiley

I'm coming from south of Waxhaw, so it's a good drive for me. I don't know how you prefer to do things. But I hope to avoid rush hour, and hope not to have to make multiple trips. Waiting, or getting lunch and coming back isn't a problem.

I like premium stuff and don't mind paying for it within reason. Haven't really thought of any upgrades, but we can talk about it. Don't need hydraulic brakes. The avid 5's work fine. I've got new pads. Might as well switch these out as well.

Although the Mary has been strong and reliable, at some point I'm looking for a better bike. Been looking Specialized Stumpjumper SS and the Honey Badger with belt drive looks intriguing. I'm open to suggestions.

I try to shop local first (which is how I ended up with a beautiful new frame from First Flight).  If the availability of what I need is not local and there is no known or reasonable timeframe of when I can purchase the product I look online.  The same goes for pricing.  If pricing is somewhere in the ballpark I will pay a small premium to go to a local shop and pick it up.  As a consumer though I'm not paying MSRP if the same product can be found on every online site for a deep discount.

I don't buy the whole bike shop "takes care of you" when you shop with them argument either.  You can expect good service and maybe a fast turnaround on repairs which is awesome but I don't think buying a bike from a shop entitles you to endless amounts of bro deals either.  And it shouldn't because a lbs could not stay in business under this kind of arrangement.  You can't give deals to everyone all the time and I know a lot of lbs feel that pressure.

I respect this but it's the reason I don't assume special treatment from a shop and will price shop on certain items.  I say give local shops first crack at your business though.  Mark at CyclePath has always been great about helping with repairs and giving me fair pricing on service.  He also built me a great wheelset for a competitive price.  My recent experience with First Flight was good as well!

I've got an old sayin' from yours truly, the Master of the obvious;

Buy it right, buy it once.

Sometimes it's better to pay a little bit more on the front end.

The problem is, a lot of things you just can't reliably source locally any longer. And spending the gas money to shop around is expensive and not always productive.

In a lot of cases it's become easier to shop online and have it brought directly to your door. For less than the gas and tax it would take to purchase the same item locally, if you can even find it.

This is a good site to get in touch with a lot of LBSs that support the club and local trails. You can just PM them here and get quotes and availability. I would like it if we had a place where we could put in a request for a product or service and the LBSs could reply with their best offers. Would make the process a whole lot easier and could probably keep some of the business local.

It's actually much easier to reach me via the telephone number in my signature.  I sometimes don't check PMs for days.  Same with Facebook PMs.   Smiley
