Hi All,

Has anyone done a weekend bike trip to Bervard, NC? Looking to go soon and wanted to get some feed back about the area / trails there?

Thanks Smiley

One word...awesome

What's your group's skill, fitness, endurance level?  Those details will be needed for trail recommendations.

Half the riders in Charlotte are up there every weekend.

People either love it, or hate it.

What area trails do you normally ride and how do you do?

I have the same question. I usually ride WWC (all sections except goat hill), Sherman branch(full loop), colonel Beatty (all sections), and BYT. My chubby butt is a much better descender than climber so steep grades are not my friend (see comment about WWC). Any recommendations for brevard, black mountain, Asheville areas?  Sorry to hijack your thread

If you don't like long sustained climbs, I would say DuPont or Bent Creek.  A mellow starter route in the Ranger District would be Cove Creek to Daniel's Ridge (left).  Not a long ride, but would be a fairly mid-level rider friendly starter.  From there if you're feeling good, you could do Thrift Cove to Grassy Road, down the lower part of Black Mountain.  Not enough, then climb up lower Black->Grassy Rd->Thrift->Sycamore.

Check this out....

I was there this past weekend and camped at DR Campground.  My family was with me, so I just did a quick loop both Saturday and Sunday.  Climbed up Clawhammer Rd., then over to Pressley Gap, and down Black Mountain.  You'll get a good climb in going up Clawhammer as well as a challenging initial part once you start on Black.  The lower part of Black fast and fun.  From my campsite I did this loop in about 1hr 15min stopping briefly at Pressley Gap.
I've also done Clawhammer to Black and down Avery.  This is a longer climb and I think Avery is also a much more challenging descent.  I believe both loops can be found on the website.

I've  been to DuPont  3 times this year and I  love it. Take a map, plenty of  water and enjoy your ride.
BTY I consider myself a  intermediate rider and usually ride 20 to 25 miles when I ride there.

The climbing in Pisgah is very different from Goat Hill style climbs. They are much more drawn out and as such make it much easier to pace yourself. That said you should start climbing Goat Hill, I'm not much of a climber either but the DH always makes it worth it.

Clawhammer-Maxwell Cove-Black Mountain is a classic that everyone should try. You can tack on Sycamore as stated if you still have some juice left in the tank.

On average 1 Pisgah mile = 3 Charlotte miles.

The climbs are longer and steeper, the descents are longer and steeper, the beer is better and colder.

I love climbs and jumps, still getting used to rock gardens lol. I ride all Lake Norman trails, Sherman Branch, Rocky River and BYT. I've only been riding for 6 months but I love it! Still getting used to my full suspension! However I'm really up for anything and if I cant do it, I'm not afraid to walk it out. Smiley

It really comes down to what type of riding you are looking for. I went up to Pisgah for the first time a few weeks back for the 55.5k race. It was the least amount of fun I have had on a bike, ever. Now this wasn't meant to be an easy path through the mountains. It was meant to be challenging. It was.

Its not really something you can explain in words. You really have to experience it. I seen a few people attempt to compare the climbs to WWC Goat hill. The whole climb wont be as steep as some of the goat hill sections, but some will be much steeper and the over all climb will be miles and miles long. (Laurel mountain climb was like 7 miles)

So if you are one of the ultra endurance guys or perhaps some one not ashamed to hike-a-bike a bit, this might not be a deterrent. But if you have never "mountain" biked try to find something a little less challenging.

I mean, I can pull 3 complete laps at the WWC (9-10mph average) with out taking a break. I didn't make it up black mountain or laurel mountain with out some hiking. (out of gas, not to mention the parts outside of my riding ability) I do plan on going back for laurel mountain ride, but my wheels will never touch black again.

I don't get that feedback at all.  I am a very competent rider with less than average fitness.  It usually takes me about 70 minutes to make it around Sherman Branch and all of the WWC is not a problem, but I slowly make my way up some of those steep climbs, and you'd have to really incent me to do multiple laps of a 20 mile trail system like the WWC.

With that being said descending Black is one of the better rides in Pisgah.  The climb (for me) sucks, the long fire road followed by the steeper single track and topped off with the insulting hike a bike is totally worth the descent.  It really has everything from the gnarly technical top part to the really fast and flowy lower section.

Now that I have that off my chest if you are going there for your FIRST time in the "mountains" I'd recommend you ride Bent Creek and Dupont.  If you are looking for more the typical "Clawhammer to Black Mountain" is doable for an intermediate rider(I wouldnt do it by myself), if you still have some legs when you reach the bottom of Black take the grassy road back up and veer right to Sycamore.

Just do it... you won't regret it... if you like MTB, you will love Dupont/Pisgah.  No questions asked... if you can ride BYT, RRT, WWC... you will have no problems in Dupont/Pisgah.  If you have to walk a section, so what... that's what MTB is about.  Everyone has to start/learn somewhere and the only way to get better is to just do it.  Everyone's got an opinion and you will most certainly here it all on the interwebz.... the only way to know is to just go and do it.  Ride within your ability and you will be fine.

You sound like the type of person who would really enjoy it.  Like Rob said, if you have never been to the "mountains" before you might want to try Dupont (ride ridgeline)  or Bent Creek ( ride Greens lick) first.  Groups from Charlotte go up there every weekend.  Would be good to go with someone who has been before.  Keep an eye on Trailblazer Facebook and the forum for group rides.  Maps can be purchased from all the local bike shops up there, but I would recommend THE HUB in Brevard.  They can get you pointed in the right direction as well.

3 complete laps at WWC including all the loops?   Fig8, Carpet, Tower whatever, Wedge, Weigh Station, Toilet Bowl, Green (Lake Loop) and East Main?

When I was training for the race I would ride from my house to the thread trail ~2.5 miles. I'd ride thread in and do two laps (all sections except slalom), then ride home. These rides were what I was basing speed off of honestly.

I have done 3 laps a couple different times in the past. It's not something I do regularly. It's on a weekend and I do not ride green on the weekends (I feel like it should be left to family's). So no it wasn't completely full laps. And while I'm not sharing fish tales, it was probably closer to 8 mph than 10.

It's not that I love WWC, it's just sooo close to my house it makes it easy to run out blaze through an hour ride and get home. Which is what a normal ride is for me 1-2 hours.

As far as the Pisgah black mountain trail. There must be another way to the top other than what they had us ride/hike. All I know is the start was pretty bad and by the end I spent most my time screaming obscenities. The climb up laurel wouldn't have been to bad if I had fresh legs, and the descent down Pilot rock was awesome.

It was my first time to Pisgah. My only other trips to the mountains for rides have been to Rocky Knob (love this place). So it was mostly my fault for not going up a few weeks in advance and thinking riding our local trails could prepare me for something like that.

Here is a map of the 55.5k race route. I'm not familiar with the area like I said I have only been there once.

Nicedart, you are very correct about there being a "correct" way to top out black mnt trail. You sir climbed the entire decent of the trail (as I have 20 times over) to get to turkey pen. Rob, you would not like this climb at all (even though I know you would do it)... Only the elite racers (maybe 12-15 people total) can pedal the majority of it, but everyone must at some point hike-your-bike. That's Pisgah for you; learn to love hike-a-biking or be frustrated. That 55.5k you did is a big boy race and kudos for tackling it. The OP said he would walk something that he isn't ready for (up or down) and that is the key to riding/learning Pisgah, so go and ride the mountains as much as you can! Cheers

Please go back and do it again with a fun group of folks before you write it off completely. I had a great time at the 55K (yes including all the hike a bike lol) but I will say that it would be a brutal way to experience the Pisgah for the very first time. Don't let that race break you of the awesome experience of Black Mountain. That would be a shame.

I took this ride with a friend a few weeks ago. It's  a  little long but it was one of the easiest  rides we have taken  at DP.
Everyone I know that has been  to DP loves it.
