Protecting Your Dome... from the sun

So for a variety of reasons I shaved my head nearly bald (#1) and have a few questions for the rest of the follicle depleted mountain bikers out there. How do you protect your head from the sun both on and off the bike? I mean, the helmet has enough vents where ten minutes in the open sun can give me a weird waffle pattern on my skull. So - do you wear a bandana under the helmet? Wear sunscreen (which will be a little tougher after the hair grows out a little)?

How about off the bike? Sunscreen on a really short buzz?

I bought some hats...

I wear a skull cap under the helmet. It has a sweat band in front and tails in the back. Works well enough.

Usually a ball cap off the bike, but if out in the sun a long time I have a straw Justin Brand western hat.  Wear it doing trail work too.

Winter its a felt crush-able pack hat.

Used to slop on the sunscreen but got tired of the sweat bringing it into my eyes. Besides I wear glasses now and the eye brows will paint the sunscreen on the lenses.

Smiley

Yeah, Headsweats is the brand. Thanks for the cue to my memory.

HeadSweats, or similar, dew rag under the helmet; sun block while off.

I used to ride; now I just drink and cry about not riding.

Question. Have you ever seen a Mexican landscaper wearing sunscreen?

Answer;

Nope.

Hat.

Although I wear it occasionally, especially on the water, sunscreen in my opinion just isn't reliable. And is expensive. But maybe appropriate for brief exposure near civilization.

The two best full coverage hats on the market for extreme conditions and that are packable are;

Sunday afternoons adventure hat

Outdoor research sun runner (Plus, it converts to a standard baseball hat and will fit under a helmet with a little adjustment)

For normal conditions off the bike a straw hat from Harris Teeter, etc.. works well and is comfortable.

What to do under your helmet? I don't do anything. For some reason I can't quite explain, I still have hair. I imagine a bandanna, skull cap or t-shirt cut to size will do fine. As long as it's not 100 degrees. ))

I'm not bald but I do keep my hair short. I work outside all day, and just got a couple skullcaps to try. One is Headsweats shorty, the other is a Chill-Its. Both are made with wicking material that's supposed to evaporate the sweat off you for cooling. The Chill-Its one is slightly thicker, but even under a hardhat seems cooler than a cotton/poly bandana or jersey cloth. It does a great job keeping the sweat out of my eyes and fits ok under the hardhat....should be the same with a helmet. The Headsweats I have not worn yet but is a more snug fit, so should go even better under a helmet.

Bought one. These seem like the "snood" that a friend of mine wears to keep his neck and face warm in cold weather riding.

Thanks for all the suggestions... and yeah, I'm not a huge fan of sunscreen if I can avoid it, seems like it would be tough as the hair grows out a little. Probably the way to go if you shave it to the skin though.
