I've recently met quite a few people that have had hip replacement and still ride.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

I have a friend in her 70s that is a professional dancer who has returned to form after a hip replacement.  It was a long recovery but it's possible.  It' a far less complicated procedure than years ago.

I had a knee replacement in Jan, followed by a second operation a month later after getting staph. I was riding by the end of April, and feel great. Go for it.

I don't have a choice, there is no blood flow in my right hip and it's killed the bone / joint and the ball in my hip is cracked, I've still been trying to ride some but the last 2-3 months have been hell. I got the same problem Bo Jackson had.

Wondering if you recall what the first signs/symptoms were that you had a blood flow problem to your Hip?. I have been suffering some pain in the left groin after a ride or run. Hoping this is just a tendon/muscle strain. my pain seems to be getting worse!!

A normal groin pull should take around 4~8 weeks to heal if not re-aggravated.
If the muscle is torn it can take 3~4 months to heal.
When I tore a groin muscle and it took mine 6 months to heal because I did not follow doc's orders.
And it did get worse for a while as I thought I could fight though it.

Hip avascular necrosis is not all that common and tends to be associated with very specific risk factors.  More commonly would be muscle/tendon sprain, cartalidge damage or arthritis.  Some issues are more common depending on age range and activities.

Wasn't meant to be, Scott.  My sincerest apologies and best of luck with your hip. Smiley
