Another WWC Root Question - Carpet

Okay so I never thought I would do this, but having a hard time cleaning this one smooth and fast.

Its on the downhill after the first initial climb.  It's a small 1.5 -2 foot drop off that turns sharp to the right.  How are you guys hitting this and keeping speed?  I initially thought go from left to right but couldn't put that together quick last time.

Don't confuse this one with the other similar sharp turn right before the "carpet" climb.

Thanks!

Not sure where you are talking about.  What section of trail, East main, figure 8, tower 93?

If your talking about the hard right on the new east main extension, I have no idea.  I have to grab alot of brake there.

I'm not sure what kind of "speed" you are looking for.  I typically just roll over the crest of the hill and drop off at the middle or a little right of the middle and lean the bike into the hill to make the turn, but I don't try to do it with "speed."  I kind of let gravity take over.  You quickly get lined up with the downhill so you can take your hands off the brakes and fly down the hill.

If its where I'm thinking, 180 back to the right and down the hill?  I don't think you can do it fast.  The drop is too close to the apex of the turn.  Combine dropping, turning and braking equals a trip over the bars.  I'm sure there are faster ways through than the one I take, but at my age, I don't like trips over the bars.  Coming in on the left will open the turn up some, decrease the drop and may make it faster.  Good luck.  No crashes!

I crashed there once, years ago (the drop hasn't changed though, I rode it again just two weeks ago). The other responses are correct - you can't ride it with anything resembling speed. You have to roll it slow and then tap the brakes a bit once you are back on level ground. Walk it first and look for the best line for you. I go slightly left, but far left might actually be a better choice.

Good luck.

I've ridden it probably 50 times and never crashed but never been able to carry any speed on it.  Seems like my ? is answered, and I'm doing it slow just like everyone else.

Thanks!

Personally, I think it looks way worse than it is.  I ride a XL 26er with 120mm up front mind you and don't go OTB..

I just hit it dead straight, on the far right of it.  As soon as my rear tire comes down it, I whip the front hard right and begin the downhill.  I don't hit it fast, but I don't hit it at a dead stop pace.  It's a bit too sharp to carry much speed down it.  I've gone down it a few times on the left, but I don't find that a good line.  My body always takes me to the right side line.

if it's the drop off with a sharp right turn that leads to a downhill plunge
prior to carpet, You can go through the gap right of the Tree and miss the
drop altogether. After that there's a sharp right turn that then takes you
over the small bridge just before the left climb up carpet, thats become
challenge to me, due to erosion. Undecided

I might have mistaken where the OP was describing - there's another rooty step down before a sharp switchback and then you start a long gradual climb that culminates in the exposed "carpet" uphill.

If it's the one before the hard right and downhill then yeah, just go right over it and lean/turn for the descent.

Either way, you can't carry speed through these two turns.

I think he is talking about the first drop off, the one that has a log or telephone pole or something you go over...

Crappy video (not mine) but the one @ ~40 seconds right?

I usually hit it on the far left and swing wide and deal with speed loss (not that Im fast anyhow); the one time I did hit in "at speed" (only because I didn't know it was there) I nearly overshot the turn....

Yeah, from what everyone else is saying that's the one. At first I thought he was talking about the one closer to the end of the trail - that one is an even bigger nuisance because there's no downhill to help you get your speed back amd the transition area is full of  roots and rocks.

I hit it straight on then hit the brakes fairly hard to make the turn... however if I'm feeling lazy I'll just roll it... but where's the fun in that?! Right after that, take the mans line to the right of the tree for added bonus points. Cheesy

Just going to confirm further with everyone....No great amount of speed can really be taken into that one. As was said earlier the drop is too close to the apex. Not saying crawl it because it takes the fun away but definitely will be no launching off of that.

Sometimes you have to slow down to go fast. Wink  It's all about rhythm.

I need to find this line that is to the right of the tree.  I don't recall ever seeing it.  I always just drop down into the ditch.

Alright looks good, man that video makes it look like a twig.  I was hoping someone had a secret line that carried speed into that downhill, but looks just like what I thought.

See you guys on the trail.  Cool

The OP was done with this topic 8 comments back. Bet he's sorry he asked now.  Roll Eyes

Let's go back to the root I hate - mine is after a little downhill so you SHOULD come into it with speed but then there's a tight switchback and a little bridge and a climb. Anybody got any magic lines for that one? Eh?? EHHH???

If you are talking about the section right before the hill to the "carpet" I go really far right on that side as there is some rocks piled which makes it a bit smoother and helps me carry my momentum and keep on cranking.
