Headphones while riding...Reminder

Preaching to the choir here, but just a friendly reminder to those of you that wear headphones while riding - try to keep your music at a level where you can hear what's around you - I.E. other riders coming up behind you.

Now for the real part of this:

To the fella that was riding WWC in a red sleeveless shirt, black Fox shorts, red Shimano shoes, white 26er, BLARING Taylor Swift in your headphones (Yes I was granny pedaling for that long behind you that I heard and remember this all) - I'm the "mother effing a$$h0le d!ckhead" - my name is actually Sean, though - that was behind you for 1.3 miles while you were 100% oblivious to my MANY attempts to gain your attention in the usual friendly manner. Sorry for not being sorry.  Maybe turn your headphones down before you start screaming at me when I pass you on the widest part of the trail...

Lol, I thought about that after the fact.  But I literally am not a "racer" mentality.  I give people tons of time to move out of the way.  I even say outloud "no rush, whenever you get a clear chance".  But when I passed him on the right through the trees, he flipped out!  I even said sorry right as I passed him, until he decided to take a guess at my name, as stated above.  Oh humans, you never let me down.

Best way to get their attention is to put your front wheel on their back and I don't mean back wheel. I guess that's why lots of riders ride where their not supposed to. I love music as much as the next person, but some folks have them things in their ears all the time. That's not being aware of your surroundings. What's wrong with listening to all the sounds of being in the woods riding your bike?

I am guilty of sometimes riding with my headphones. What I am not guilty of, however, is blaring them or not being aware of riders behind me. I also yield the trail quickly when someone is clearly about to overtake me.

I find the principal offenders can all be found at the WWC. Last week I got stuck behind two girls on the Lake Loop (I almost wrote "Weight Loop" - oops) who, despite hearing "rider back" multiple times, kept huffing along. Fortunately they both got "disembiked" on the one large root that lays across the top of a small uphill and I could blow by them. It wasn't the first time that I encountered rude people on the trails there (one time some idiot that had clearly never been there thought she was smart and informed me and my buddy - "that says one way" when we exited the Lake Loop. It was clearly the exit though. Eh - enjoy your eminent heart attack and let me know where you come out).

I thought about PMing the WWC guy on here and asking him if the employees at the bike rental could remind the patrons to yield to faster riders. And maybe keep their mouths shut.

I feel like we should be the ones swearing. I also feel like a guy blaring Taylor Swift should lose his mountain biking privileges. And if he had a beard, he should be forced to shave it.

He's lucky you're as patient as you are...

Oh yes, it was.

The only reason I like Taylor Swift is because I'm going to marry her - but she just doesn't know it yet.

+1

Last weekend I was stuck behind a jogger that was going from the left side to the right side of the trail with the beat of the music. It was loud enough that I could hear it, I hollered between tracks, but that didn't work. Finally on an open section I went around and looked back only to find out I was number 1.

Newbies are easy to spot so I will give them extra time to figure out what they want to do. Some though are really challenged by what to do next, guess decision making is not one of their stronger points as well as what "on your left (or right)" means, sometimes followed by my saying "your other left".

I don't wear headphones for a few reasons:
1. I like the sound of knobby tires on dirt/rock/roots and occasionally nothing at all.  There's a peacefulness to it that I don't want to cover up with earbuds.
2. If there's a mechanical issue with my bike that I can't feel, but can hear, I want to hear it sooner than later.  When I used to be into the rockcrawling scene, I always shook my head at the guy blasting his stereo through obstacles as vital parts were dangling off his rig.
3. I don't want to be the d-bag that has no idea what's going on around me.  I've been behind enough of them.

Thread winner right here.

Cycling/running/etc outdoors is for the experience.  Why take away one of your senses?  Both for taking it all in and for saftey...  But, unfortunately being rational with these kinds of people is usually a moot point.

To the OP, I imagine the other person is on his running forum talking about the rude impatient bicyclist that almost ran him over the other day and all his buddies are talking about how terrible mtn bikers are...  Tongue Smiley

I enjoy music when i ride alone but i use a phone mount on bike and listen through the speaker.  i do try to keep the volumn low due to wanting to know when someone is near,  the large variety of musical genres that i listen to is not always for others and also a few songs might be embarrassing for others to hear.  i do run a bike bell to warn others that i am behind them(which is seldom) and it normally works pretty well.

I would say I listen to it about 20% of the time and only when I ride alone. Sometimes it's helpful when you are trying to increase the intensity of your rides. A little Blink 182 goes a long way, especially during the first few miles.

Btw. He might have been dressed like one of us, and doing what we "do" - but dressing like one of us don't make you one of us.  Cool

The issue is not the headphones but the indignant nature of said a$$hole.  He/She knew you were there but decided that they were going fast enough so  f>%* you.
I run into a few of these $hitheads around the Charlotte area trails.

Usually a gentle tire rub is all it takes to break their confidence and they will let you pass.

For all you guys saying you should have tapped the guy in front of you with your front tire, have any of you actually ever done that?

I have.  It’s been about 15 years ago in an enduro.  In an enduro, you restart several times so you end up passing the same people all day.  Because you start 5 people per row per minute and you race the clock, you generally let people by who catch up to you from latter rows.   I had this one guy who was hard to pass because we were in a section of tight young pines.  I was behind him for what seemed like forever but I now suspect it was only a minute or two.   So after it was clear he was not moving, I started ramming his back tire multiple times until the trail opened up and I could pass him out right.  At the time I felt just like you guys.  He disrespected me by not getting out of the way.  Looking back on it now, I see clearly that I was the bigger jerk.  I have not done that since and hope never to again.

I have come to see that these guys who hold you fast guys up to long either are newbies and just don’t know or they are made by people like me on the motorcycle or lap timers/strava racers on bicycles.  I’m betting this Talyor Swift fan has been through this before and he will be even more indignant next time.

Yep and I'll do it again. THere is a big difference in someone that is un aware and someone that is being a obstinate. THe fact that he got passed clean, and managed to throw out some obscence language tells the story. Anything else you want to call me out on Phil while your here.

I'm patient with people who are slower riding out in front of me because, nine times out of ten, I AM the slower one riding in front of someone else looking for a decent spot to pull over and put a foot down. I wouldn't rub their tire primarily because I don't want to cause a wreck.

I'm not against a gentle reminder, however, and if you are skilled enough to pull off a tire rub without causing a pile-up, and someone refuses to yield, I say go for it.

However, being slow, or startled, or new, or jaded from being rudely passed before, doesn't excuse unleashing a ridiculous string of obscenities at a fellow trail user who is just trying to get by and enjoy his or her ride. To be honest, he's lucky the OP didn't swing his bike to a stop in the middle of the trail and teach him some manners.

Which brings me to a simple question. What kind of genius doesn't consider the following: How smart is it to start cursing at some random stranger on a lonely trail in the woods? - a guy who is apparently fitter than he is (and doesn't listen to T Swift), in a place with no cameras or witnesses (even when it is packed you can ride trails like carpet, toilet, or weigh station and never run into another cyclist) in a place like whitewater with hundreds of cars and dozens of similarly dressed cyclists (all disguising their features with helmets and shades) and plenty of crowds to disappear into afterwards?

Stupid.

People who go out on the trails and treat other people poorly (when 99% of MTBers are cool) represent everything that trail riding is not.

While I was lolly gagging through the woods today,  T swifty came on and I heard the distinctive buz of a paying strava fast guy so I hastenedly turned down my speaker, planted my 26" panaracers into an old dead pile of sticks and patiently waited out the Hemi.  He was like a mongoose on crack chasing a king cobra

Yep and I'll do it again. THere is a big difference in someone that is un aware and someone that is being a obstinate. THe fact that he got passed clean, and managed to throw out some obscence language tells the story. Anything else you want to call me out on Phil while your here.

Jerry, I’m feeling the brotherly love, but don't take it personnel.  Several people on here claim this is the thing to do.  Tire tapping might even be in the IMBA mtn bikers multi use trail users guide for all I know Smiley

Look, having been doing this for quite a while, I can say that I am/have been faster than 95% on the downhills, and slower than 99% of you on the climbs.  So I’ve been on both sides of the equation.  I also have small kids who ride who can get all up in the way.  99.9% of people are good with the kids.  But there is 0.1% of lap timers that can’t wait 30 sec for my 6 year old to figure out what to do.  They don’t say it, because they know they can’t, but the look on their face tells it all.

Let’s look at the OP’s incident.  He says he was behind this guy for 1.3miles in his granny gear.  Really?  First, that would be at least half a Taylor Swift album.  Second, can you tell me where there is a stretch of trial 1.3 miles long that there is not a section wide enough for someone to pass out right.  Especially someone who is sitting back there fully recovered in granny gear.  I bet there is not 300yrds of trail anywhere in charlotte that you could not find a place to pass out right.  So I do question some of the specifics here.  We need both sides of the story.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the runner here is not a jerk .  I’m just saying any one who hits someone else on purpose, in the end, is the bigger jerk.   And I fully admit I've been there.

Yes a rider.  I don't think anyone is advocating running over a runner with their bike.

Apologies to the OP, but this is silly. At no time in 20 years of trail riding have I came up on a rider wearing ear phones that could not hear me call out "rider back" and get out of the way. That rider must have been hearing impaired if you could not get his attention in 1.3 miles. I certainly never found it necessary to tire bump anybody....and I'm not even that nice.

disagree.  It happens to me frequently at the WWC.  Happened to me the other day on the Lake Loop and several times this summer.

Sager I agree: I have had this happen across the country but most frequently around here in da woods. Usually a couple times a year. Don't ride WWC much. LNSP most common for me to run into someone with someone riding with the earbuds.

I've had it happen to me also.  Only at WWC though.

Interesting, that's not been my experience. Maybe I don't notice because slowing down for that few seconds to get their attention doesn't register to me as an irritant.

I don't think you read it correctly.  I didn't tire bump anyone.  I only do that to friends.  I yelled out many times about my presence - nothing.  I literally said outloud to myself "hmmmm okay maybe he's deaf?".  Legit thought that.

This made my day.

Okay, granny gear wasn't my absolute lowest gear - I embellished that...But it definitely wasn't a normal pedaling gear.  My point with all this is, I'm not the guy that rolls up on people and tries to pass them immediately.  I give plenty of time.  Hell, I'm not in a rush and say that verbally to 95% of the people.  So, unless I'm racing, or you're really being a dick (this instance), I will not intentionally go around you on a single track portion of a trail without you expecting it.  I realize everyone has their own skill level - he definitely wasn't a newb by any means.  And being on the Lake Loop, I expect things like this.  It's the easiest trail - for all levels of riders. But if you go out on a black and don't listen up, well, you're just an idiot.  You're on an advanced trail - act like an advanced rider and pay attention to fellow riders.

Again, this wasn't supposed to be any arguments between anyone here, it was just a reminder that if you have headphones, turn it down a bit so you can hear fellow riders.  AND DO NOT curse out riders that come up behind you - luckily I'm not the type that has any God complex or gets egg'd on easily.  That wouldn't have ended well for him.

We should boycott the WWC!  Angry. But I really like their trails...  Sad. We should boycott the Lake Loop!  Smiley. But it's part of my "cool down" rotation...  Undecided. We should, we could, we could... write an angry letter!!!  Huh

We could honk our horns in a threatening manner and shake our fists when we drive by the gate house, pointing to our OVERPRICED PARKING STICKER!!!!

I'd recommend you use the less physical technique exercised by a rider at LNSP last weekend.  "Hey, I'm timing this".
