Shipping Frame to Canada, What Is Cheapest/Tricks?
07/24/15 at 10:57pm

I have an inquiry from a buyer about a frame.  Looks like he wants to pay for shipping to Canada.

I'd do it for him, but was wondering what the tricks are?

Old threads on pinkbike and mtbr say USPS and marking it as a gift is the way to go, to avoid UPS.

What do you all think?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Fedex or UPS, even if it costs more.  If you are selling it rather than giving it away, you want to be able to track it to the final destination.  USPS and Canada Post are good at what they do, but once it crosses the border you would not have visibility to what happens to it.  Marking it a "gift" is certain to make Canadian customs curious what is inside.  Shouldn't be an issue for a (used?) bike frame but might delay the delivery a bit.  Be honest if asked about the value of what is inside and if it is a private sale vs. a business entity making a commercial transaction (you probably will not be asked).  I am not an expert in cross border shipping, but I am from there, and this is based on my experience traveling there often and shipping stuff to friends and family there occasionally.

USPS will be the cheapest and fastest way to get any box out of the US. As long as you use usps.com to ship I have never had an issue and we ship old bike stuff all over the world.  If you use priority mail you get tracking for the entire shipment.

I thought USPS wouldn't ship anything that large? I've brought big boxes in to them before and they've turned me away and told me to go to FedEx or UPS.

A side note to be aware of.  If you ship anything ground specific to Canada, there may be a brokerage fee.

A frame box should measure under 108" and be ok to go.

Good point.  I forget that the way they measure a package and the thin profile makes up for it I suppose.

Then I would agree USPS for getting to Canada at least for smaller packages has always been the easiest.

try bikeflights.com. I've never shipped internationally with htem, but they're half the price domestically.
