My goal is 2 rides per week of 20 miles each. All dirt, all single speed. No road.   I did it last year, and I am way off pace this year. Too many things going on.

I can't get out three-four days a week unless its for a special event like a race or trip.

When I had to cut back on my ride frequency a few years ago, I decided I was going to ride longer each ride and it helped. The longer rides have helped me build endurance that I wasn't getting from shorter rides. So my opinion is that 2 x 20 > 4 x 10. It sure cuts down on the time I spend driving to trails!

I think increasing the distance definitely helps. Just since this thread started I've been trying to up my average distance. I used to just ride 1 lap of whatever (Renni, Sherman, etc.) but now I'm trying to keep my rides between 11-13 miles (WWC is particularly good for picking and choosing what loops you want to take to increase or decrease total distance). I do find my average speed increasing a little bit because I don't seem to be getting fatigued as easily yet. I was surprised when three consecutive days on the trail was doable (my legs actually felt good the third day).

I figure 12 rides a month for at least 125 miles total is a reasonable goal for me at this juncture.

All dirt - roadies gamble with their lives around here...

Thanks for this.  This is what I'm going to try to do.  Seems like a good answer to those that don't get out as much, but still want to improve their endurance/speed.  I just don't have the time to be on the bike as much as most of the people in this thread.  I'd love to, but between daddy-ville and teaching, it's pretty much impossible.  Props to those who get out there that much.  One of these days.

There is a book called "time crunched cyclist" that might be interesting to those of you who are looking to get faster, but don't have the time.  It's a bit oriented to training rather than pure enjoyment, but it can explain some of the phenomena involved.

Once or twice a week 7-10 miles a ride.

Don't really have the time to ride more. Too busy with other things. Not really interested in getting faster. I'm fast enough already on local trails.

I paddle and hike also.
