Beatty or Riverwalk for kids?

Which is a more kid friendly set of trails?  I know Beatty is a good choice, but I haven't ridden Riverwalk yet and curious how it compares since it's closer to the house.

ASC is out, too many roots to contend with for my youngest.

Gosh, I though Beatty had a lot of roots.  If ASC is out, I'm not sure if you want to do the blue trails at Riverwalk.  Plus, once you start the second part of the blue trail, you are committed for about 3 miles, although the trail is bi-directional.  There are greens at Riverwalk but they are mostly access roads with one short single track. SWDP is great beginner trail and then you have the Lake Loop at WWC.   My neighbor took his 6 or 7 year old son to Sherman for his first ride.  He said he did fine but I was surprised.

Hadn't even thought about the WWC lake loop just because of the long drive. I wonder if it's really that much farther than Beatty though. I may have to take a look at that one.

I remember Beatty being pretty smooth when I used to ride it, but that was a few years back.

ASC is only smooth for the first and last 1/2 mile or so.  The rest is pretty root filled.

Beatty is pretty darned rooty, but it's gentle contours make it fairly kid-friendly. My kids learned to ride at Cane Creek Park in Waxhaw, and that trail worked pretty well for them.  That was long before Beatty existed.
However, it costs to ride there, and there is the occasional horse.

Sherman has one of the best beginner routes in the area. Start down the central doubletrack via the normal start, but don't turn left with the main trail. Continue down the double track just a but further until the main trail crosses (from left to right) the double track - go right here on the main trail. Then, everytime the main trail crosses the central doubletrack - go right, down the doubletrack untill the next left-to-right crossing and go right on the main trail. This keeps you on the right side of the center doubletrack - do this all the way down till you get to the bottom of the doubletrack. At the botton, visit the 2 lakes if so inclined (a good "destination" and a must for young ones) and then take the main trail back out the normal direction.

This route is great for kids and anyone just getting started. Very smooth, no real obstacles and everyone wants to come back again for more (which is of course the key result!).  If your youngster is a fisherperson and you gots a license, take some poles and a sannich and make an afternoon of it.

Southwest District park is a good alternative on the othe side of town. May need to walk the initial 20 yard downhill entry with the very youngest riders.

Hopefully Lee will add more information if he sees this...

WWC is adding a new "all-weather" trail that will run along the main lane out on one side and back down the other.  All machine groomed gravel type surface...  Not certain about the miles... I'd guess 2-3 maybe...  Anyway it looks to be a perfect track to bring kids that won't be too challenging and if you want to cut it short you can cross the road and hit the return path.

They look like they are really pushing that project hard... not certain when it will officially open but you can see a bit of it when you are driving in to get an idea of what to expect.

anyway... another reason to visit WWC...

Did mention they have beer?

We've been talking about a trip to WWC in the coming weekends anyway.  Will definitely need to look into all of this.

Rode the Prairie Loop at ASC today and that wasn't a bad option either and it's only 1.5 on the main loop or a bit more with some detours and only a few tricky spots. Definitely smoother than the school loop

If you had the kids out on the prairie loop and they had no problems then for an other good local ride I'd go to River walk and do the green loop. The trial is wide and very few roots to deal with. You can after wards add in cooling off in the river.
If you or they feel adventurous go can try taking a few detours on the blue sections.
The good thing is some of blue sections go in a short distance and come back out on the green loop so if gets difficult you can bail fairly easily. (check or get a trial map so you don't get turned around.)

Is there a spot at Riverwalk that you can actually jump in the river?  Wasn't sure if that was acceptable.

No place I know of where I would jump too shallow and too many rocks along the bank.

you had mentioned cooling off in the river which is why I asked.  I didn't literally mean jump, just enjoy the water.

If you mean just getting in the river, yeah you can do that at any point.  There's a paved path that goes along the river. Maybe 1/4 mile from the trailhead there's steps and a sandy area we swam around in.  We saw plenty of inner tubing a couple Saturdays ago. This paved path also leads to the mountain bike trails.

Dont' forget there's also the pump track by the bmx course, it's pretty fun for kids too.

When you used the word jump the first thing I thought of is when my kids were younger and when they went near water the thing they looked for was a rope to swing out on or a ledge to jump off of, it was just a flash back to those days.

It's funny you mention the BMX track.  I was just up there talking with them tonight and they allow mountain bikes on the pump track and it's free to ride after you sign a waver.

I'm planning to spend some time up there building up some core skills both for me and the  boys.

Good to know about the river access. Nothing feels better after a ride than a dip in the nearest body of water.
