For me it's about having a clear and easy way to see your ride and analyze it ( aka look at it on a real computer) and/or share rides, routes, whatever.

Bottom line is, No matter whos system it is,  If you don't have a sensor on your bike while in the woods, you will never get acurate distance or tracking

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

Rob's right - If by "track" you want something to map your route and add a social media type component that gives you the ability to "share" rides or participate in some sort of community, then I think Strava or Runtastic Mountain Bike are the way to go. But as far as tracking rides, I'm really only interested in 3 numbers - Total Distance, Time, and Average Speed. So I stick with the Cateye.

That's a good one too, but usually the result of a single downhill... lol.

But doesn't a speed sensor turn it back in to a Cateye?  I'm obviously missing something here.....I mean that seriously not sarcastically.... What do these units hold as an advantage over a regular cycle computer?  Seems like they are way more expensive and still not practical for use in the woods....

I know, I  know, I know, pick me!... So as a Strava user AND a cheapo $20 cateye I can tell you why I want a gps unit with a wheel sensor...

So I like Strava because it tells me a few things... such as my longest ride, my most elevation gain ride, my fastest time on a section, my total distance & elevation this year, my total distance & elevation period, how fast / slow I am through a section, what trails I have ridden (especially important for places like dupont) - and the beauty is I can pull all these up and look at them on a map to analyze.  In addition to all that it's nice to see PRs after a ride, especially those that you feel slow on and about die on....

Now, why the wheel sensor?  Because strava on the phone doesn't give accurate data and is about 20% off in my findings... for someone that rides over 2000 miles a year I'd like to get credit for that.

Ok...That's pretty much what I was thinking.... Good summary....

Yup, that pretty much sums it up for me.

I'm a visual kinda guy and spreadsheets don't do it for me personally. Jeff hit on about every reason I have for wanting it to be GPS tracked, but also the addition of the wheel sensor just adds that extra bit of accuracy to the big two (speed and distance)

So are there any decent speed sensors that dont use the stupid spoke magnet thing?  I know the new Garmin one is hub mounted, but I don't it works as a standalone (for a phone or whatever) speed sensor
