Bike Fitting - Knee Pain

Who are some of the better bike fitters in town?

After year long break, I just got a new bike and have been riding about once per week.  Started feeling knee pain that really only shows up when pedaling or similar range of motion. Doesn't hurt to jog or walk.  I'm figuring its related to either seat height or cleat position or both.  Hoping that its an easy fix.

Sit on bike normally with pedals at 12 and 6.  Hold on to something so you can stay steady.  Extend your heel to the lower pedal.  Your heel should barely contact the pedal with your leg completely straight.  If that is not the case, I would say your seat height is off.

Unfortunately the last guy to fit me isn't in business anymore, but most of my issues came down to cleat position.

Wishing you luck on finding a good resource. I know how difficult it can be to fight knee pain on a bike Sad

I HIGHLY doubt this is a bike fit problem...but it cant hurt to get a proper fit.  9 times out of 10...pain is caused from tight muscle groups pulling on a joint.  Flexibility is hugely under-estimated in my opinion.  In my case, my knee hurt due to a tight IT band which is very very common for cyclists.  Google and read about 'IT Band Syndrome'

I'd recommend to buy a foam roller and STRETCH.  Hold your stretches for 40+ seconds.  Look up IT band stretches (there are some you can do while sitting at your desk).  And roll out your legs every day, both your quads and the side of your leg.  10 times up and down.  At first, you wont be able to put your full weight on the roller but you will over time.

I disagree.  Pain can be caused by many issues.  Tight muscles are one but misalignment of joints, especially those who over pronate, is definitely high on that list.  I do agree that using a foam roller on chronically  tight muscles (hip flexers, piriformis, hamstrings and quads for cyclists) can be helpful.  Knee pain from cycling can be an indicator of misalignment in the ankle, knee and hip and typically starts with the shoe/pedal interface.  If it's a chronic issue then consulting with an orthopedic Dr would be advisable.

Evan is a Specialized BG Fit technician and is very meticulous in his approach.  Give him a call and at least talk with and see if a fit would help.

I disagree too.  I've felt pain, promptly changed the seat height, pain no more.

I was just voicing my opinion based on my past knee issue.  I no doubt agree that a bike fit can help.  All in all, do whatever it takes to make your knee better!

No worries, man!  I know it's opinion and I tried to disagree as respectfully as possible. Smiley  This is still America, dammit!  Smiley

Another plus for Evan.  He set me up on my road bike.  Learned a lot in the process which I was able to apply to my MTB set-up and really help my riding.

Yep, hit up Evan and look at cleat position. Sometimes have had inner knee pain when swapping to new shoes. It goes away once my cleats are positioned correctly.

For curiosity sake, what does a bike fit with Evan cost?  Base price without adding the price of components etc...

$250. Includes a follow up as well.  Whole process takes 2-3 hours.  All measurements and before/after photos and video are saved in a file and emailed to you for future reference.

so if you don't want to spend $250, my method works pretty well for many.  foot position on the pedals is also something you can do yourself if you google some techniques.  Not professional and maybe not as precise, but for mountain biking, I think close is about as good as you can hope for.  It's nice to get fitted, but seat posts slip, cleats slip, things need to be cleaned.  it's hard to keep it there.

I had a similar issue.  Had a fit done up here, saddle was a few mm high, corrected that.  Still had it, turns out I had the typical "not very flexible" issues.  A stretching regimen has helped tremendously, even though I am really bad about keeping it going.
