Camping in WNC

I want to do an overnight camping trip, stay up in the mountains and ride DuPont before it gets too cold at night.

Any suggestions on campsites close by?  I would be a novice camper as it has been a few years since I have been outdoors overnight, no need for showers but a facility with a toilet might be handy. Tips would be appreciated as well. I have the basics, portable grill, tent, sleeping bag, cooler with food etc.  Any other necessities?

Headlamp

Water

Coffee

Ibuprofen

.380 (optional)

Put your food in your vehicle before you turn in at night, or hang it from a tree branch higher than a bear can reach. Yes, this means you will need some stout twine. No food in your tent unless you like unexpected company.  Smiley

Check this place out.... easy car camping and great for the novice camper who is looking to getting more into it.... maybe about 1-3 miles from Dupont... lots of shower/toilet options, swimming pool, lots of Campers so you'd probably be less likely to have any bear activity.  They serve breakfast in the AM and you can pickup basic supplies/food from the office.  Prices are very reasonable also and each campsite has electrical/water hookups so you can have all your creature comforts.

I was wondering if the .380 was to have something to throw at the bear =D

Noisemaker for bear.

Of course, unless you're on the bottom. Then all bets for the bear are off. )

Gotta draw the line some place.

A few of us took a trip to DuPont back in the spring and stayed there. We rented a small cabin and it worked out great. I highly recommend it.

I camped at the placed linked to below a couple of years back with a few friends, and we all liked it.  It is pretty large and sits right on the edge of the park boundary.  We only hiked that weekend took the car over asphalt to parking and a cross-the-mountain gravel road back.

I've stayed at both places multiple times here is my quick compare...

Black Forest:
Very, very clean bathrooms - cleanest campsite bathrooms I have ever seen
Close enough to DuPont to ride from site to Corn Mill Shoals access
WiFi at camp sites
No cell reception except front porch of office (at least was like that last year)
45ish minute drive to Hub / Pisgah
Swimming pool
Has Cabins

Cascade Lake:
Bathrooms were fine...but not near as nice as Black Forest
Closer to CLT by at least a 1/2 hour
Short (5-10 minute) drive to the DuPont trails
15 - 20 minute drive to Hub / Pisgah
Spotty Cell reception..WiFi only at office
Can Kayak/ Canoe from campground up to DuPont's Hooker Falls (great for family trips)
Swimming beach
Closer to the Kids MTB / skills are in Dupont
No Cabins

I don't think you can go wrong with either...but I like to hit Pisgah as well as DuPont so Cascade Lake works best for that...And my kids love the swimming beach and canoeing at Cascade Lake
