What happened at Sherman?

Hadn't ridden there in awhile.  Surprised to see all the ride-a-arounds on some of the tech sections (all of them?) and arrows painted on rocks piles/gardens... and the wooden feature.

All these changes legit or just the way the cookie's been crumbling (please don't just blame STRAVA)?

Thanks.

Didn't see that thread and had no idea they'd been there that long.

I also noticed the new cheater lines yesterday.  I will say I don't mind the easier line to the right through the lower rock section just before the log rollover on Main.

I see that happening everywhere I've been lately. I guess we have a lot of greenway riders trying to ride singletrack trails. If you can't ride rocks and roots, please ride the greenways!

I guess what I'm thinking is whether or not we should be shutting these down before they become the norm or just let it go?

As I was riding, the more and more I saw them, the more I wanted to start dragging some rocks and logs around... but wasn't sure if we're just letting this go, being as some of the lines seem very established.

I said I was sorry. But as Team Dickey points out these lines are well established (it had been 2 months since I was last at Sherman) and I didn't even realize I was on the chicken line until I looked over and saw the rock garden to my left. And I thought, "Well that worked out better than normal," followed quickly by, "what have I done?" Cry

I was in the same boat.  Found myself on the new line without even realizing it until after I left the section.

I don't ride out there often enough to have the lines memorized.

That sucks. I'm sure Enoch is planning something sinister to take care of the problem using the mini ex. Wink

I quickly shut these down at Fisher.  Ironically have not seen many of the "expert" cheater lines since we stopped including Fisher in the Summer Series.  Not hating on the race, just the racers who seem to think this is legitimate etiquette. Smiley

I have these at my disposal.  Wanna shortcut?  Earn it! Smiley

The cheater line around the first rock garden on the main at Sherman started getting formed about 2 months or so ago.  I don't have a problem with ANYONE riding there, even those that don't have the ability to navigate those sections.  But at least try it.  The first 3-4 times I went through it I crashed, then I began to learn the proper line and it became a fun challenge.  I will even admit that the painted arrows don't bother me.  I think they look ridiculous, but they don't bother me like it does some.

Having well designed alternate routes around difficult features is one thing. Cheater lines are bad because, in addition to "dumbing down" the trail, they also widen it, and can lead to erosion or drainage problems.

The painted arrows are a problem because they violate the footprint rule that most mountain bikers (who should be environmentalists by nature) are pretty good about. Also, this was just some stupid yahoo who poached a trail they don't help maintain and thought it was okay to go out with a can of spray paint and vandalize the work of others on a nature preserve  (because that's what SB is).

Only so much control you can exercise over a public park.  I would be far more concerned if people damaged the wooden structures or set "traps" intended to hurt unsuspecting riders as has happened a few times.

The painted arrows are actually considered vandalism.  Sherman Branch is also a Nature Preserve so it makes it doubly worse.  Maybe Enoch can get a group together with some supplies and paint remover and clean it off.  That's what I do at Fisher when yahoos pull this crap.

I heard all the arrows point in the direction of Fisher Farm.   Wink

I feel what's happened at Sherman is good for Sherman....

SB is an "Easy" trail , There is no denying it... it simply is great for beginners, kids Newbs and people just learning and getting into cycling. Its the first suggestion I give for an off road place anyone might ask where to ride or give it a go.

The discussed Rock garden area has become worse and worse year over year with erosion, I remember blasting thru there with more dirt between each boulder. Since its such a  short section of  " tough " trail many people can see reason to Avoid or ride around or Cheaterline it.....  If the experienced even take the cheater line too then it must not be that fun to bash thru boulders on a hard "Spot"  = yea i avoided it too last week... no harm no foul.

Not to mention about the same for the ' NEXT rock section - thats Wide as a Jeep trail with ride around.

I noticed too the root drop that has to be handled after the 2nd road crossing ( fast straightaway ending) now has a ride past and a down and around... and thats fine too!  Give people options. not the option to go over the bars all the time.

Fisher F Even has' Optional  " harder" lines = Cant Sherm share the same?

If we need harder lines- there are harder / more difficult places to experience too.
