I feel what's happened at Sherman is good for Sherman....

SB is an "Easy" trail , There is no denying it... it simply is great for beginners, kids Newbs and people just learning and getting into cycling. Its the first suggestion I give for an off road place anyone might ask where to ride or give it a go.

The discussed Rock garden area has become worse and worse year over year with erosion, I remember blasting thru there with more dirt between each boulder. Since its such a  short section of  " tough " trail many people can see reason to Avoid or ride around or Cheaterline it.....  If the experienced even take the cheater line too then it must not be that fun to bash thru boulders on a hard "Spot"  = yea i avoided it too last week... no harm no foul.

Not to mention about the same for the ' NEXT rock section - thats Wide as a Jeep trail with ride around.

I noticed too the root drop that has to be handled after the 2nd road crossing ( fast straightaway ending) now has a ride past and a down and around... and thats fine too!  Give people options. not the option to go over the bars all the time.

Fisher F Even has' Optional  " harder" lines = Cant Sherm share the same?

If we need harder lines- there are harder / more difficult places to experience too.

I think the biggest issue being taken is just the fact that these trail bosses and the few volunteers they regularly get for the workdays to make the system of trails in this area so great and diverse did not design the trails with these alternate lines in mind. Being that I have no trail building expertise and rarely am able to make it to work days I just feel that the respect should be given to the people and hours upon hours of work that have been put in to not alter the trails. Looking past the fact that it can causes degenerative issues in the sections it also becomes a sort of a slap in the face for the ones who designed these sections that take pride in giving areas to further develop your skills. If you are just learning then you may need to do a few hike a bikes to get through sections which also gives you a chance to study them and figure out how to navigate them to further your ability. All in all everyone has their opinion but should we not at least give these builders the benefit of the doubt and understanding when they get pissed for someone altering the trail they are charged with maintaining?

Fisher Farm works because it's a stacked loop system. If you can't ride a loop, stay off or work to improve you skills.  Don't alter the trail to suit your skill level.  I've found that 2.5 miles on a beginner loop is more than enough for newbies to cut their teeth.  I've been adding "Pro Lines" over the past year or so and will add more in the lower section.  It's a way to spice up the beginner loop and keep it from becoming "boring" but still allowing beginners to enjoy.

Now onto the roots...and leaves...

Roots are part of a natural surface/mtb trail.  They only way I will remove them is if they are a safety hazard (popping up significantly) or causing the trail to widen.  Otherwise...complain on about the roots cause they're there to stay. Wink

Leaves have there place...not in the drains of a trail.  I do one to two times of removing leaf litter but still leave a thin layer towards the end of the season.  Reason?  Drainage.  Keep the drains clean/clear and spring time maintenance doesn't suck so bad.

Just to throw out there, I personally always take the "real" lines and never choose to go around any of the obstacles at Sherman.

But here's my take -

As long as having the cheater line doesn't damage the true line, and as long as the owner of the land does not have a problem with it, then I think it's a good thing.

People who are just getting started will see that section as more difficult (although it may not be to us). MTB'ing is for everyone, and I don't think beginning riders should be discriminated against. MTB'ing is meant to be fun, and if that gets more individuals into the sport and builds our community, then great!

However, I also see no problem with someone getting off and pushing the bike through the section if they do not want to ride it as long as it doesn't interrupt someone behind them coming through.

That's just my two cents.

As the signs at BYT say "Don't modify the trails to match your current skill.... instead, allow time for your skills to grow and match the trail"  This should be followed everywhere. If you want to ride a trail that might have a "few" sections that are too difficult, then just get off of your bike and walk it.  Or try it.  Or watch others do it to learn from it.  I personally run into these cut throughs on various trails and they confuse me.

Imagine if BYT had bypasses all over...it would be a disaster.

I haven't been out there in a while but noticed the arrows yesterday. It sucks that someone would vandalize the trail but they actually saved me from taking bypasses in a couple of areas where the bypass was more defined than the actual trail was. Looking back to my last ride, before yesterday, I had a newer rider with me and remember calling out to them watch for the rock garden but we never encountered it. Cleaned the whole thing last night though.

I'm not trying to be antagonistic, but BYT has all kinds of bypasses BUILT in to the system. Built being the key word here. There is a bypass at the first rock drop at the beginning of the trail, all of the log rides have bypasses, and the main jump run has a long straight trial going down the middle. However, these are what the TC designed and built (and I really appreciate them  Roll Eyes)

Scott has actually closed down many of the errant cut through s and bypasses over the years.
