Cyclist hit on Statesville Avenue Wednesday

Print Post
I got a phone call just a few minutes ago that I hoped I would never get.  A friend and customer was apparently hit by a CATS bus yesterday on Statesville Ave and critically injured with major internal bleeding.  He is currently in the trauma unit at CMC Main unconscious, in critical condition.  He has had two emergency surgeries to address the bleeding and is currently on a ventilator.  His name is Moe Adkins.

Only two things I ask:
1. Keep a fellow cyclist and fellow human being in your thoughts and prayers.
2. Stay safe and alert on the road when you ride.

I was lucky to escape only getting grazed by a car about 20 years ago.  I turned into the  side panels as a woman pulled out in front of me, took a wallop and got pulled along a little bit but more scared than harmed.  This is the thing I tell anyone about riding on roads with cars:  She never saw me.  They never do.

I hate to say you need to have an extra set of eyes, but you should always ride defensively with the assumption that they don't know you're there.  People get complacent when driving (worse now with pocket electronics) and their brains are just cruising on the lookout for other car-shaped objects.  You've got to be extra careful when you're out there in traffic because there's little guarantee that anybody in a car is looking out for you.

I hope your friend is strong through surgery(s), and makes it out of ICU the right way.

That's awful.  Thoughts and prayers for Moe.  I know opinions vary on this but I really wish we had more bike lanes around here.

Sad news. Moe succumbed to his injuries around noon today.  He never regained consciousness since he was struck and didn't seem to suffer.  He will be sorely missed at the shop. Cry

It's mindless that this kind of this happens so often.

And nobody seems to notice, nobody seems to care.  Angry

Where's the outrage?

I'm not sure what outrage we should be calling for.  Did you read the explanation of the accident?  The article I read made it sound like it wasn't the bus driver's fault.

Yes.

The fact remains that for most of the population we have no choice but to ride in the road and play chicken with other traffic.

I think you remind of us of a broader point. For many people it will always be the bicyclists fault regardless of the facts of the incident. In their minds, for not having enough sense not to ride in the road in the first place.

Unfortunately our approach to personal transportation in this country encourages the law of the jungle. And the law of the jungle clearly illustrates that bicycles lose in practically every situation, regardless of fault. And in most cases, and under other circumstances the penalties for running over one are very small.

Maybe we should require air bags. ))

As I showed above, in some places they do things a little differently. I think we could learn something from these places. Instead of just disregarding them as some third world s..t hole without shiny bank buildings and stadiums that take up half the counties budget. But perhaps that would be pandering too much to what we deem as undesirables. You know, those that give so many the impression that they can't afford a shiny new BMW.

What I find most interesting is that most of them can.

I was in Hilton Head a couple of weeks ago and they have "bike lanes" that are separated from the road.  They actually won an award for bike safety.  The reality is, I did not feel safe at all on those lanes, especially at intersections as cars were even more oblivious to the bikers and bikers were expected to come to a complete stop, which of course they don't do.  Cars were turning into bikers and I could imagine all sorts of calamities happening.  This seems like an approach for commuters, but not necessarily for cyclists.

To me, this approach in Hilton Head, encourages people to be even less aware of bikers than they are in Charlotte.  Frankly, I rode mostly on the road instead.  I found it to be much safer, especially in the lower traffic areas.  I'm not sure bike lanes are the answer, especially where there are tons of intersections and out in rural areas.  I think we are fundamentally flawed when it comes to commuting.  Cities are large and driving is almost required to get to where you need to go.  Some communities are cross-functional, which helps, but America is a driving country.  I won't truly feel safe until Google is piloting all cars.

Yes I agree. It is a complicated problem. And there are no easy solutions.

So I think it's easier to do nothing. It's just not a value for the majority.

But in societies with much more pedestrian and bicycle traffic, the bike lanes and pedestrian lanes are separated from the roadway. With trees or barriers in between. And elaborate, well designed crosswalks and strict enforcement. Rarely did I see an intersection not controlled by a light with a pedestrian crossing (I did not see one bicycle on the road in the city. It would be considered insane). The nice thing about these places is people feel safe to get out of their cars and walk or bike to their destinations. Or just move around by human power. Or dog power. ))

Not even the dogs are crazy enough to get in the road. You spend 5 minutes driving around you'll know why. It's sort of like musical chairs. Ironically, there doesn't seem to be many accidents.

This also increases social opportunities many times. Instead of being locked up in a box constantly speeding or standing at a standstill staring straight ahead at the next car in line. Another thing I notice, most people seemed to be in better shape physically. And seemed to have a much easier time managing their weight.

Public and private transport is developed and operated at such a high standard that owning a car isn't absolutely necessary. I think many people here consider riding the bus the equivalent of potentially attending a riot. And I aint getting on board without my hogleg.  Smiley

It would be very difficult to implement what I have seen in other places here without tearing it all up and starting over again, and making a few more changes. Like not putting up with so much of the bull....

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

Cycling lives matter.

Darwin would roll over in his grave if he witnessed our society. Maybe we should remove his name from the textbooks.
