Leaves can help protect against the freeze thaw muddy mess.... They both insulate and absorb....

Saw it last year when it popped up on mtbr.com. He has some points but for me the pros don't out weigh the cons...by a long shot. Each trail coordinator is allowed to deal with the issue how they see fit. Different climates and different soil composition will "dicky"tate the best course of action.

They create a layer on top of the mud. When ridden they become crushed into the mud, adding organic material to the mineral soil and retaining moisture = berms on the outslope of the trail = not good for drying trails.  Sad

Most likely not going to blow any leaves at North Meck this season except for the drains...  Shocked  There is so much traffic on the trail that the leaves get beat down really quick.  I bet it will help the areas that get affected by the freeze thaw out there too.

I really like riding Lake Norman in the leaves, it rides like a new trail.  Maybe we should wait until March or so once it warms up to blow the leaves off LKN.  It could allow the trails to stay open more this winter.

We should all just "leaf" the decision up to the TCs...

My opinion on blowing the trails?

I could take it or "leaf" it....

Although, we should just "leaf" well enough alone...

I mean after its done where does that "leaf" us?

This is a timely post and I have been thinking about this myself. Last winter I blew the leaves at SWDP several times and noticed major frost heave. The trail ended up slick as snot for a long stretch. I do not recall it having that problem the winter before when I was not coordinator.

The issue is that the trail does not get heavy use, so the trail has a tendency to disappear. I am leaning toward blowing once when the leaves are really deep, but there are more still to fall, then focus on drains, keeping deadfall and debris off the trail, but not blowing the trail clean. I may clear a test section just for fun and see what comes of it.

Unfortunately frost heave will happen underneath the leaf litter as well.  The leaves just "hide" it. Smiley  Tried it at Fisher years back.

Then there was some crazy wizard magic going on in that video.... Wink does the frost penetrate the leaf layer?  I'm not doubting you since you have more first hand experience then I do... Is the video just propaganda or what?

What he's actually showing is frost heave on areas that are low and don't drain well.  Much of the trail he showed without leaves and all the frost heave was pretty flat.  The area that he chose to show leaves preventing frost heave actually had a pretty good grade meaning that it drains well.

Another thing he fails to mention is the accumulation and integration of organic material into the mineral soil of the tread surface.  Granted, some loamy soils contain a certain amount of organic material but the ones that drain well typically have a fair amount of larger stone and/or sand particles in them.

It really depends on the geography and soil geology of the trail.

I've been observing the seasonal cycles at Fisher since 2004 and sometimes are just a good time to stay off the trail.  Red clay is great when it's dry but sucks when it's wet. Tongue
