Woodrun Extension coming

I received a letter from Uwharrie National Forest which reads

"Dear Uwharrie National Forest User:

The Uwharrie National Forest is proposing to construct 1.1 miles of new mountain bike trail in the Wood Run recreation area.  This new trail would tie in with the existing Wood Run Trail(TR396) from the southern end of the current trail to Hwy 24/27 trailhead.  The trail would average 3 feet in width.  Construction includes one stream crossing with culvert, benched trail segments, tread surface armoring, and new signs.  The project area is approximately 10 miles west of Troy in Montgomery County, /north Carolina.  See attached map for project location.

The Uwharrie National Forest has identified this action in order to take the current bike traffic off the main road and into a trail in order to improve rider safety. This would allow riders to directly access the trail system from the trailhead parking area and not have to travel the road.  There is concern over bike/car collisions on the road and a need to separate use.

If you have comments, questions, or concerns regarding the proposed action, you should send your replies by November 25th to:

Theresa Savery, Recreation Staff
Uwharrie National Forest Service
789 NC Highway 24/27 East
Troy, NC 27371

That's a good idea. I've been talking to ranger Church at LNSP about making a 2-way trail to the Wildlife area. It would run along the state park road from the entrance of Laurel and travel through the woods close to the road, ending on the 2-way trail to Wildlife. It would keep riders off the state road and would be safer for them.

I believe this is a direct result of (Ranger) Terry Savery taking the initiative to prepare and submit a NC Recreational Trails Program grant. She told us earlier she had done so for this segment. I'm not sure if this still needs archeology and other NEEPA or State Forest reviews/ signoff, but Terry may have addressed those already. I presume that the Forest Service releasing this information means Terry got the grant (?), but not at all sure. If she did, we should be sure to try to work with her and any bid process the Forest Service would need to go through to hire a contractor to be sure we don't get just a "low bidder". (I know Ed Sutton is looking forward to getting back into some grey Uwharrie dirt!)

This will be a great addition.

Jim, did Ed build the existing section of the Woodrun trail?

I'm glad to see a connector, but I wish we could get some more trail mileage, Not just something that parrallels the gravel road mileage we are allready doing. I guess it is easier to pick the low hanging fruit.

Dutchman needs to become a multi use trail if we can't get something new done.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

Mike, this would be a cool thing... let us know if we can help push it along.
