Can't decide upgrade my 29 to FS or upgrade the 26

Print Post
Right now I have my hard tail 29 that I love and ride 90% of the time but I'm also looking for an FS ride to spend more time on.  I have an old Trek 26" Fuel right now that could stand some upgrades including...well frame/fork and wheels. The mechanical bits are all good to transfer over.

So do I give up the 29 hard tail frame and look for a nice squishy frame for that, or do I keep the hard tail as is and upgrade the bones on the 26"?

Honestly I'm wishing I could just go to a 27.5 FS but that's not in the budget right now.

FOR ME, I ditched the 26 and never looked back.  I ride steel 29'er hardtails, one geared, one SS.  Do what you want, just keep ridin'.

If you don't have to ditch it don't, sometimes it's good to change from one bike to another, plus some trials are more fun on a 26" than a 29" and vise versa. Put a new set of wheels on the 26" and the 29" might start collecting dust for a while.

Sell the 26" bike complete and ride the 29er while you save up for a 27.5 bike.

29ers arent going anywhere for a while and you can do pretty much anything on a hardtail 29er short of full on downhill.

26" is dead unless you are into DJ or DH. Even most modern DH rigs are 27.5. Dont dump any money into a quickly-becoming-obsolete standard. Get shed of it before its too late and you can get some cash for it.

I think I'm definitely leaning towards keeping the 29 a hard tail and either upgrading or replacing the 26. I think you have a point that some trails are going to be more fun with one than the other and the 29 overcomes some of the short comings of the hard tail while the 26 or future 27.5 would be better as a FS.

Makes perfect sense to me.

Anyone know who's bike this is? (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);

Curious if they are a THTB member. Might be worth a drive to Asheville.

26 is dead? Haha. 27.5 is a marketing scheme the bike companies put together to sell you a bike that doesn't roll as well as a 29 or handle/jump as well as a 26. They did a test of the same bike in all 3 sizes and the reviewers all put the 27.5 as their least favorite.

Bottom line is that bike companies did for the 27.5 what Hallmark did for Valentine's day.

Still plenty of guys rolling on 26'' wheels - myself included. Fix up your bike bro.  Wink

I'm faster on a 27.5 then on my 26. And have 0 issues hitting jumps with it. It gives better traction in corners and handles as well as my 26 ever did. You can keep riding 26 as long as you want, I'm not going knock ya but there definitely is something to 27.5

How about a 27.5 + hardtail? Tires are plush at 3" wide with tons of traction. The Specialized Fuse is a hardtail with 140mm fork. Have some to demo. Wink

Honestly the 26 is dead for everything short of DJ and DH and even most DH is going 27.5.

There is a reason none of the bike brands sell upper level 26" bikes anymore.  The same reason everyone can not unload their old 26" bikes fast enough.  The industry has moved on.  If you enjoy the bike by all means keep riding it as the 27.5" or 29" is not going to allow you to have any more or less fun on them.  I just personally wouldn't sink anymore money other than maintenance items into a wheel standard no one supports anymore.

Back in Feb I give up my Specialized Hardtail 29er and purchased a Santa Cruz 5010. The SC is FS 27.5. I shopped around and found a new one at a great price, added a dropper seat post and converted it over to a one by. I enjoyed ridding my 29er but it fails in comparison to the Santa Cruz 5010.
Do yourself a favor and take a test ride at DuPont on a nice FS 27.5.
BTW it took me a little while to save up the money but it was well worth it.

My SS is 29, my trail bike is 27.5 and my DH is 26.

I have no issue jumping the trail bike, quite the opposite.

About your 26 FS, if you like it, ride it.  I just would not put money into it.  if it needs a fork and/or wheels get a 27.5 FS.  I reluctantly drank the 27.5 kool-aid, but clearly understand the benefit over both 26 and 29 for a trail bike.

I wouldnt say its a marketing scheme. 27.5 has many advantages. 29" wheels were a branded a marketing scheme at one time. Whether its a marketing trick, the "industry" selling us on something we dont need, or an improvement over the 26" wheel its definitely here to stay. How many 26" wheel FS options are out there for 2016? Kona has one and maybe a random few others but thats it. Whether we like it or not 26" wheel standard is fading fast...

Since the OP rides the 29'er 90% of the time I wouldnt invest much in the 26" bike. Maybe put enough into it so its ridable if the OP plans on riding the 26" bike more than once a week. If its just a sit around collecting dust bike dont waste money on it and save up for a 27.5 bike.... at least until the next wheel size standard Smiley

I heart my 26".. I came from a bmx background so love the smaller bike. I also hate being told what to do so when I'm told I have to get a 27.5 I dig my heals in! Hopefully there are enough people who feel the same way and resist the marketing machine that pushes stuff that no-one asked for... like hub spacing "standards" Huh

So I ride the 29r 90% of the time because it's just a better bike right now than the 26.

I'm looking for something I can split my time on and spend more time on the FS. I have enough joint problems that after a solid long riding session, the knees and hips start to ache. I'm looking to the FS for some help in that regard.

So if I'm going for a quick after work ride, I'm going to take the 29. If I'm looking for a long day on the bike or longer weekend rides, I'll grab the FS (of whatever size wheel).

I wasn't meaning to turn this into an argument over 26 vs 27.5 or even 29. I know that's a hotly debated subject. I was looking for advice on the best way to round out the stable. I was back and forth between buying a FS frame for my 29 and just moving everything over or keeping it as is and upgrading/replacing the old FS.  It sounds like the later is the better option be it 26 or 27.5 is likely irrelevant for my riding skill set.

Seems like everyone skipped over 29er fs frame. Could be wrong but it doesn't sound like you plan on hucking off the side of a mountain or doing downhill so seems to me like that would be a good option.  And unless you are racing I really don't see the point in a geared hardtail and full suspension aside from having 2 bikes in case something happens to one. Unless you make the hardtail a single speed....at which point this topic would be mute since you would no longer want a geared bike.  Roll Eyes

N+1 bikes Smiley

No reason to own just one. Plus my oldest son rides with me from time to time and luckily he rides the same size frame I do so I can justify having more than one in the stable.

Reviewing the original post I did notice something that I must have read over the first time - you included "frame" in the list of parts that need upgrading. That, along with the "fork" and the "wheels" (I'm going to assume you actually mean wheels and not something much simpler like tires), is pretty much, well, the whole bike.

And while I still like my 26'' and don't feel the need to buy a 27.5 because industry marketing or internet forums say I should, I also don't see the point in completely rebuilding a 26'' at this juncture either. For better or worse (and who knows, I haven't demoed a 27.5 - it may be "better") the standard is, as Banjo points out, now obsolete. When mine wears out, I'll probably just ride a 29er.

If you pretty much ride XC/Trail, and/or you ride a large or XL frame - then to answer your original question I would "upgrade my 29er to FS".

If you are a smaller rider, or if you like to do a lot of DH or all mountain type stuff, then you should probably go with your inclination to save up some dough and buy a FS 27.5.

However, if your 26'' frame doesn't really need to be scrapped, then I stand by my belief that you should give it some love and keep on riding it until you can get another bike you really enjoy riding.

Cool Carry on.

I will interject with some proper bro etiquette.  You have a hardtail 29er for most of the riding you do so if you also build a FS XC at this point you will appear soft and indecisive to other dudes.  Another XC oriented bike at this point is only acceptable if it does not have gears.  To be frank, front suspension would be overkill too.  If you rebuild your FS frame or go with a different frame it needs to be a longer travel All Mtn rig.  Current color combos to consider are black and hot pink, or blue and neon yellow.  Do you even know what a fat bike is?!  The riding you do 99.99% of the time should be an afterthought when choosing your new whip.  What to do next should be clear.<---- Tounge-in-cheek.  One thing for sure is that these tough choices are fun to make!

Good luck with your build!
