Kind of a dumb question but...

It came up talking with a buddy of mine. With bikes being such a big ticket item now ($3,000 - $5,000 in many cases) it's surprising that no one offers trade-in value for your old bike. I mean, 3k can buy you a decent motorcycle, and they let you trade-in. I've traded in guitars, and know that people can trade-in guns, etc. when it's time to upgrade or buy a new one.

Do any shops do this?

Imagine the sales they could generate with something like a "Certified Pre-Owned" Trek or Specialized or Niner sale. If the shops gave it a full inspection and replaced worn out parts? I'd buy one. It'd encourage people to try new bikes (650b for example) and keep more than one bike in their quiver. Seems like a lot of good old bikes going to waste.

Just a thought.

See? That's brilliant. And since I'm likely going to be in the market soon - now we might have something to talk about. Do you have a hard time selling the previously owned bikes?

Anybody else out there doing it?

Every time I have a good idea someone's already done it. First the internet, now this...

Just like with cars your going to get screwed on trade.  Selling bikes is pretty easy and you'll get way better return

I know - I just put one up on Pinkbike and it's getting decent attention. Someone asked if I could trade it in and it got me thinking. Some shops probably have more generous trade in policies.

I tell that to every customer that asks about trades (I wouldn't call it getting screwed though). Of course you can get more selling it on your own but many customers do not want to deal with people low balling them or having to meet somewhere, even better is the crazy fees charged on ebay and such.
We will explain what we can give based on what bike is being traded towards. We can give more trade value if the bike being purchased is higher. We will tell you what we will sell it for as well, we have to make a living which means we have to make a profit and we also tune the bike up and offer a 30 day guarantee.

We also explain that if we offer $500 on a trade, the customer can put a deposit on the new bike and try to sell their bike for more than that on their own for a few weeks, if they are unable to then we will still give them the agreed upon price.

I personally have done both within the last year.

It's a great question, and a plus that a bike shop would offer this service.

Here's a bicycle blue book if you want to get an idea of your old bikes worth in the marketplace.

It's crap, just bring it by the shop and I will get rid of it for you!

Seriously though, if you really are looking at trading send me some pics to [email protected]
