Transplant from NJ arriving February

Hello!

My wife and I recently sold our house in New Jersey and are heading south to relocate. We are part of a huge forum (MTBNJ.COM) locally and this seems to be the equivalent.

We are planning on moving to the Huntersville/Concord/Davidson area. We came down a couple of weeks ago and rode Sherman Branch and did a loop at Lake Norman. Awesome trails and awesome work to maintain them, I must say! Not as rocky as some of the stuff that we normally ride, but I'm sure you can get that fix somewhere else.

Really looking forward to the local vibe and some of the larger races that happen in this region!

Welcome!

We have recurring group rides on Tues and Wed nights if you would like to join. The Tues night ride rotates around to different trails so you have to check the forums each week to see where it is and it starts around 6:15ish. The Wed night ride is always at Francis Beatty Park and it starts at 6:30. Also our monthly club meetings are the first Thurs of every month (we skip Jan and July) and are at Dilworth Neighborhood grill. Coming to the meeting is a great way to get involved and meet new people.

If you end up in Concord, Rocky River Trail & Uwharrie National forest trails are convenient options with more primitive feel.   It's hard to find rocks like the northeast...  Pilot Rock in Pisgah is probably most similar.

Lake Norman is pretty sweet.  It is certainly not rocky, but I really enjoy getting out to ride 30 miles of purpose built single track!  Not that I normally ride it all in one sitting...  The variety of trails in this area will certainly keep you busy!

Winter time and weather tend to make this place slow down a bit.  We have few all weather trails and few that allow night riding so we go hibernate a bit more.

And if we didn't like northerners we wouldn't like 1/2 to 3/4 of the population.

Ha! On our forum the winter brings out everyone along with the banter of being stuck inside with no riding Wink

I'm from CT originally. Being from the Northeast, I have to say, I was shocked the first time dug a hole down here and realized I could sink a spade to full depth with out hitting a single rock! The geology down here certainly allows for some nice smooth and flowy trails.

I spent one summer up north putting in fence posts for a horse field. Each hole ended up being a 5 ft wide crater with a pile of boulder next to it...

On the other end of the spectrum, I was helping a buddy armor a perpetually wet section of trail a couple weeks ago, and the hardest part was actually finding the rocks. Never would have thought I would struggle to find rocks in the middle of the woods!

Ha! We have places by us that are sand pits too, easiest trail days ever. Others that take 50 man hours to make a 5 foot section of trail... Those are hard days for sure!

Yup! Born and raised. I'm 29 and hoping I'm escaping the trap that is NJ. $7000 in taxes for a cape cod versus what looks to be $2800 (THE MOST) for taxes for a 4 bedroom 2 car garage brand new house? Talk about a breath of fresh air!

I hope you and your wife enjoy this area when you move here. The only loop at LNSP that has rocky sections is the Laurel loop. I was in the navy and went to A-school in Lakehurst, NJ. in late 70 and early 71. Only thing I miss is the pizza and subs. I am retiring in 3 weeks from tomorrow and my wife and I will be moving to Snowshoe, WV. in April. Maybe we can ride some before the move.

Lots of people trying to escape the trap that is NJ round' here lately. Seriously I was a transplant to the Buffalo NY area for 8 mths (for my now ex wife) last year and hated it and I get it on the taxes. Please just change your plates when you get here. Tired of those milky yellow plates. NYs were worse and it killed me to mount that putrid colored metal on my front bumper....Charlotte barely feels like NC unless you get out of Meck County nowdays and our taxes will soon mirror the Northeast's.

Welcome.

The reason our taxes (and way of life) will soon mirror the northeast, is precisely because of the "damn yankees" I previously mentioned.

They bring their politics and their values with them.

My aunt (who lives in CT) came down for thanksgiving - she and her husband spent the whole time making fun of the south (country music, the Dallas cheerleaders, the number of churches, Republican politics, etc.) This is, of course, followed by "We're thinking of moving down here - everything's so cheap..."

I spent a lot of time sitting out in the garage...

Pearl, welcome to nc. It's great here.  I promise not everyone is angry that us northerners are coming down here to ruin it.  Roll Eyes

Agreed.  I'm born and raised here and don't identify with Trekker's thoughts at all.  Welcome.

Don't misconstrue me - I'm aware not everyone who moves to NC acts like that. Just saying it's why "Charlotte barely feels like NC unless you get out of Meck County nowadays... and our taxes will soon mirror the northeast."

I lived near Boston for a long time, and it's great (but the taxes and housing costs are ridiculous).

At any rate, Welcome Pearl.   Wink
