Marion Freehill Sabin:

I have a question about a good time to visit Sherman Branch. I would like to start this by saying how much my husband enjoyed riding at SB. Last year on January 10th, he was enjoying the trail when he suffered a heart attack and passed away. Our family and friends are planning on visiting the spot for the one year anniversary. I have a small plaque I will be putting on the tree at the location. What time of day is best to be there and not disturb the riders? Thank you for any advice you can offer.

Just in case some of you may not be on facebook, here is a post that should have our attention.

If they want their privacy I'm good with that, but if not, I'm all in for a group ride to show our support.

I let Jerry Adams know about it but haven't seen him respond to it.  I'm all for a memorial but I would think she would need to get P&R's blessing on installing any type of plaque on a tree.  Sherman Branch is a newly designated nature preserve.  I'd think they'd be OK with it but it is their call to make. The most touching memorial I've seen on the local trails is the tree at Beatty with a plaque that says something along the lines of "For Amber, who also refused to die". Makes you appreciate what you got as you pedal by...

That's one of my favorite spots in Beatty - you can see that the tree fell about halfway over and then managed to keep growing.  Assuming that it has the appropriate allowance by P&R, I'd be inspired to ride past a memorial at Sherman Branch, too.  A "Life is short, ride another lap" kind of thing.

Seems to me it would be better if a 4x4 could be installed in the ground and the plaque placed on it instead of a tree

Agree, this seems easily accomplished without disturbing anything nature-wise.

I hear ya man, but if the place is listed as a "Nature Preserve" then things get a little more complicated. Just how it goes.

With all the other garbage strewn about the place... who would have ever noticed....

Even without a plaque, I remember that day every time I ride by that spot. I rolled up and caught the aftermath. I never saw the man himself, but I saw two fellow riders who had seen it all. I'll never forget the look of shock and grief on their faces.

I never knew the man, never even saw his face, but I'll certainly never forget what happened at that spot on the trail that day.

Just to close this out...

Park was closed, but some special adjustments were made to accomadate the widow. She made all the proper arrangements to presserve this moment.

I think it was nice that the people who attended were able to walk the trail, her late husban Bob, could not finish riding.

very cool.

Really puts things in perspective.

All those people came out to celebrate one man's life. You never know how many people you make an impact on. Be kind, make friends, shred hard....

Abe Lincoln said  "the best way to measure a man, is when he is laying down"

Over 50 people came out 1 year after his death. Some drove down from Raleigh. I'm guessing Bob Sabin was very special to a lot of people.

Very nice plaque and a wonderful turnout for him.  I'm glad that everyone was accommodating to his family to allow them to do this.  It obviously meant a lot to them and I'm sure that they are grateful.

Awesome end to this story, and is a great looking plaque too. Glad the family could make it and the trail coordinators/P&R were able to let them commemorate Bobs life.

Very nice looking plaque and great to see such a cool turnout for this. I knew Bob a little bit; not well but had ridden with him a few times. Very cool person, welcoming and friendly man. Really seemed to enjoy life.

That is a fitting tribute to someone who was obviously admired by his friends and family.  I never met Bob but my deepest sympathies and condolences are with his loved ones.

I hope it is not inappropriate for me to point out the misuse of the word "peddling".  I wonder if it can be corrected & a new plaque installed in it's place?

Also, the fastener used to affix the plaque to the tree appears to be ferrous which may result in eventual rust lines running down it thereby marring the polished finish.
