Huffy Fat Tire Disc Brakes

Ok, here is a challenge an maybe taboo / sacrilegious question...

As serious mountain bikers its almost taboo to "upgrade" "a Huffy"... LOL

But I picked up some novelty Star Wars Fat Tires over the holidays.  The brakes *STINK*!  The front has some horrible discs and the rear are GIANT V brakes!

Changing out the front calipers for some decent Avid BBs is a no brainer.

1. Anyone have some old Avid BB s the want to part with?

Secondly I want to get rid of the gianormis rear V levers and put some discs on it.  (Its an approximate 50lb bike.  I would like for whoever rides it to be able to stop!)  It has disc caliper mounts but here is the more difficult question and the root of this thread.  The rear hub has what looks like a standard 6 bolt through disc, with a "spacer" / adapter in between. (wheel hub > "spacer" > Disc) (all sandwich bolted though / together) (this is whats on the front.  trying to replicate to rear)

2. Any suggestions of where I could purchase / find that "spacer" / adapter? (spacer is about 15mm thick)

PS.  Please no flaming on the sacrilege / taboo of upgrading a huffy... LOL

Do you have a photo of the rear hub spacer?

I was looking to do so off my phone, but recall its somewhat difficult to insert an image here without having a web facing image.  I will work on it tomorrow.  For simplistic purposes, I envision it should look like this off the bike:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Simply bolts on one side to the hub.  Then disc bolts to it.  Or may be a though bolt from disc to hub.  (haven't disassembled it yet.) (trying to do some research first.

Trying to find a rim mfg name too, but being huffy, may be proprietary?

Ill try to get some measurement off it tomorrow too.

Ok, I got a couple pics but need to figure out how to upload. (time to go read the help section again) (I recall it being in there)

Its almost exactly like that pic i provided.  The exceptions are

a. This one is thicker.  The old digital caliper reads ~16.5mm thick.  Bolt holes are ~22mm apart (center to center) (same as the disc, but not through bolted as I hoped.)  Disc bolts on face, Philips screw on back.
b. There is a small recess machined out of the face for the disc to sit in and be flush. (no logical reason besides maybe helping alignment?)
c. The back side is flared out to accommodate the wheel hub. (not machined like the disc side, part of the casting it looks.

And holy cow...  Did you catch that it is secured with Philips screws!  Looking to upgrade those to an appropriate allen hex bolt (like the ones that secure the disc)

3. Anyone know what "grade" of bolt strength is used with discs?

I have a some parts that could help get you converted to a disc setup.

No BB7s, but if you want to stay with mechanical calipers, I have a set of Tektro Novela calipers and discs you could have, free. I don't have levers for them, as i scavenged them to upgrade a Mongoose for a friend. They aren't great and tend to be noisy, but they work.

If you want to go hydraulic, I have a set of Shimano Alivio M445s complete lever/hose/caliper assemblies, freshly bled with recent resin pads, plus an IS to 160mm post mount adapter for rear. Would sell set for $50.

Also have a set of new, never used Avid G3 160mm rotors, plus 12 disc bolts. Would take $25 for the pair.

Need to see pictures of your rear hub/spacer/disc setup to fully understand what you're working with.

Yes I would like to stay mechanical.
I dont need levers.
Definitely interested in your free calipers & discs especially if you are in South Charlotte / Beatty reasonable travel area.

Any associated cables with them when you scavenged them?

I am an idiot...  Just found the attachment button...

Thanks for the help!

The back.

Assuming the spacer material is aluminum, as a magnet wont stick to it.

I would imagine that "most" of these wide fat tire bikes use a std mfg.  Cant think a lot of mfgs are putting these out.  Aside from taring the tire off, anyone already do that and know of the mfg?

Just trying to make sure I understand this... The key piece you're after is another one of those spacers?

I assume the rear hub has the same flange as the front hub, and the existing spacer you pulled off the front would bolt up to the rear and put the disc in the correct axial location?

It looks like a difficult piece to get a hold of as a standalone. Probably one of those pieces that are not available for individual sale... If you cannot find one to buy, you might have to get creative in the local hardware store ... unless you know someone with a small fab shop.

Yes, and still looking for these 3 things:

1. Anyone have some old Avid BB s the want to part with?
2. Any suggestions of where I could purchase / find that "spacer" / adapter? (spacer is about 15mm thick)
3. Anyone know what "grade" of bolt strength is used with discs?

I am not really "wanting" to get creative.  We are talking brakes here... ;]  Really trying to find a source to get the right pieces.  Im sure I am probably the only one out there trying to "upgrade a huffy", but taking a shot, someone else out there was bored or doing something like you did for your friend...

Found this at Universal cycles. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

It's a 5 mil spacer. Maybe you could use three of them?

Thanks for the find, but for $27 each = $81 + S&H!
(I could almost buy another whole huffy and throw everything out and keep the wheel!) lol  Cheesy

(Sadly enough thats starting to look like an option...)  Cool
(Looks like that Triax & Mongoose brand might use the same rim MFG.)
