At my age, if it's below 50 degrees, I don't ride. I can work in the cold, but not ride.

+1 on the plastic shopping bag for feet wind protection.  Along w/some good wool socks and perhaps another layer of biking socks, my feet usually stay warm enough to ride in the upper 20's (degrees).

For hands, I've just resorted to using a pair of skiing gloves if I needed wind protection.  They are bulky, but work perfectly fine for me.  I can even throw on a pair of liners underneath them for added warmth.  I imagine a pair of neoprene gloves (like used for wet suits) would provide some good wind protection too.

I've tried neoprene surfing gloves in the winter before.  They keep your hands quite warm, but they also sweat like crazy.  That's fine when you're in cold water, but not very comfortable when riding (plus, the smell after....)

It was 40F when I started riding Sunday morning.  I used the plastic bags advice, and although better, still too cold.  The windproof covers seems to be what the majority of people do, but I like the idea of having a second pair of shoes for even when its not cold or wet as backups.

I'll shop around for a good deal as the winter season ends and be ready for next winter.

It gets cold here?

Kidding - I don't do much riding below 50 either. But when I do I find that, even in shorts and a short sleeve jersey, I warm up pretty quickly.

Nothing beats wool socks for cold feet though.

It’s never too cold to ride if you have the right equipment. I highly recommend these shoe covers with wool socks. The tube on my CamelBak has frozen before but not my toes. No they are not cheap but they are well worth the money on a cold day.
