NBR Question about NC Salvage Rebuilt titles

Print Post
I'm looking for a car. I can go new financed, or try and find a unicorn (my own personal one). I think I found the unicorn, but it apparently has a rebuilt title. I have friends who have dealt with this out of state, but I am a bit underinformed about NC. What does "Salvage Rebuilt" actually mean? Has it been inspected and back up to par as a regular non-totaled vehicle?

Does anyone know a decent mechanic in Hickory/Taylorsville that I could have check out the car?

Thanks for any info

Scott

I'm sure there is somebody else that knows more about this but it generally means that the vehicle was in a wreck and the damage exceeded the value of the car (may be a percentage).  Insurance company pays the claim and auctions it off.  It is bought, repaired, inspected by the DMV, and issued a salvage title.

Depending on the value of the car can depend on how much damage was done.  If the car wasn't worth much to begin with, the damage wouldn't have to be too bad to total it.

The car will always carry a salvage / rebuilt title.  It will affect the value of the car if you want to sell it and may be hard to get full coverage insurance and a loan on it.  If the car looks good and drives good and you intened on keeping it, I wouldn't be too scared of buying it if the price is right.

Full coverage is expensive on a salvage title........if you can get it.

I think it means you get it for next to free or find another car.

Salvage title cars can be a good buy depending on the nature of the damage. I bought one for my daughter that has worked out well. The seller documented the damage and repair work with receipts and photos. It allowed me to buy her a car with low mileage and like new condition (by appearance) for a minimal budget.  The budget was  comparable to most of the bikes people buy now. I only carry liability insurance and I don't get worked up when it gets dirty or comes home with scrapes and dents. When she is ready for a nice car, she can buy it herself.  Cheesy

You generally want documentation of the damage and repair and pay 30% to 40% less than book value. You can get comprehensive insurance, but if you need to collect on major damage or a totaled vehicle, they are only insuring an amount based on salvage value.

All that being said, I wouldn't buy one if resale or keeping it nice was important.

In NC the damage has to exceed 75% of the value of the car for it to be claimed a total loss.  Then insurance takes the car and sells it at auction to try and recoupe some of their money back.  Who ever buys it at auction fixes the car and then it is issued a salvage or rebuilt title depends on the state I think NC calls it salvage title.
