Dog attack at Beatty

Print Post
So Saturday afternoon my wife and I are riding the green path at Beatty to get her more comfortable riding trails and off the part just before the new bridge and then the roller coaster where the 3 small jump/drops are at... out of the corner of my eye here comes a snarling pit-bull looking dog coming at me loose from a house behind the woods there... yeah, that'll ruin a ride real quick...

So with bike between me and the dog snapping at my brand new bike (3rd time out with it) snapping at the pedals and tires and me yelling for the wife to stop and do the same it finally went away but after a couple more circles on the green path warning other people who are walking with their family and dogs, makes me wonder who to contact on this kind of thing?

Other than me yelling at the house to keep their @#$! dog on a leash!  Angry

But... on a good note the wife likes Beatty for her riding confidence more than Seven Oaks!  Wink  and she's having more fun riding since I've taken her there!

I know the dog you're referring to.  This is not the first time there has been an issue with it. I would certainly call 911 and ask to be connected to animal control.  I imagine they would be pretty keen to speak with the owners of the dog.

I had a similar issue with a dog at Cane Creek Park. Finally had enough, after contacting the owners 3 times. Next time the dog came at me I got off the bike and holding the frame I smacked it in the face with my rear tire. Classic case of the dog who actually catches the car. He never bothered me again.

I have two awesome dogs and would never intentionally be cruel to a dog but Im not going to let an aggressive dog attack me or anyone else. Call 911 or Animal Control. A dog that aggressive is going to eventually harm someone and may have to be put down... Save the dog and report it to the authorities.

Totally agree... some people CCW while riding and if its biting tires and stuff it won't be long before it gets put down.  Hate to see an animal be put down b/c the owners are lazy/crappy.  The dog may have a "reason" it doesn't like bikes and is 100% non viscous otherwise... I know my hope hubs p!ss my finance's mother's birds off lol.

This has happened to me twice. Same spot. I assume the same dog. The first time was a night ride and I never saw the dog, but I heard it shoot out of the woods and chase after me. I just pedaled my butt off and it never caught me.

The second time was on one of the Wednesday night social rides. That time I just stopped because the dog was trying to bite my front wheel. I dismounted my bike and said strenly "Whoa, chill out dog!" It stopped immediately, seemed to realize I was a person and not a mechanical gazelle, and just turned around and ran back to the house.

I have seen other dogs do this, even my neighbor's super friendly black lab. It's like instincts kick in and they just take chase.

I don't blame the dog. It didn't seem to want to hurt people or anything it was just unsure of the situation. It always helps to remain calm in those types of situations. De-escalate the excitement rather than yell, or run, or kick and make things worse.

I do however think the owner's should be held accountable. That dog could end up hurting someone, or itself. It is irresponsible dog owners like that that give dogs (especially pits and the like) bad reputations.

Most of the time (not all) its just the dogs chase prey response.  If you stop, they will stop.  Another trick is to spray them in the face with your water bottle, old roadie trick.  However this is hard with a camel back......

Pick up one of these at Wally World in the sports/boating department.

Get the smaller 1.5 ounce size.

Works every time.  Smiley

I used to give dogs the benefit of the doubt. They will usually back off if you face them. I have had 2 dogs get aggressive with me since moving here. One was at Poston and the other was at Beatty. The poston dog has a rep but he is a p****. He just runs up and then loses his bollocks. The one at beatty was full on pissed off. Lucky for me I was in a fast section. Some dogs just go nuts and want to chase something.

I agree, one day he crossed the creek and chased me well past that area until I got off and got a stick with a sharp end and was all about that tarzan sabor life... I have never been "afraid" of dogs but at that moment I thought he was legitimately going to attack me so I reacted.  Needless to say he seen that sh** got real and crossed his merry butt back over the creek.

I think the dog has been put up, moved, or learned his lesson b/c I don't have a problem with him anymore.  Maybe its b/c I ride a wheelie through that creek section, while blindfolded, backwards?

This.  I carry one when riding areas I know unleashed dogs are present.  If you do not keep your dog in check I will take necessary actions to prevent getting bit/injured.

I am a dog owner and I see no problem if you need to defend yourself from being attacked. It is completely different from arming an animal without cause.

Y'all should hope that dog comes up and bites me, that way after I'm done with it, the owner can come pick it up from the side of the trail in a wheelbarrow and take it to their backyard to bury it.

Smiley

What's funny is, the dogs seem to know who to mess with...

And who not to mess with.
