The next time a dog hassles you and you know you can't outrun him, this is what to do.

#1. Get off the bike.

#2. Look directly at him with the bike between you and the dog and command in a big voice, 'Good boy'... 'Sit'... 'Stay'.

Works every time.

I remember once I was riding down a local road. Some lady with a house a good 200 yards off the road is out in the garage with her young and very large Great Dane off the leash. The dog spots me and starts chasing with the lady running after him. I'm on the single speed, so I probably can't outrun him. The dog gets about 50 feet away from me, I dismount the bike and yell 'Sit'. The dog stops in his tracks, gets a bewildered look on his face, sits in place and the lady finally catches up and grabs him. )))

Now certainly every dog is not going to be so well behaved. But most dogs respond to voice commands and most dogs don't try to eat full sized adults. This is why police dogs are trained to respond to commands in another language.

The absolute worst thing you can do in the presence of an aggressive dog is run or turn your back. Spray him with your water bottle or donate it to him, play fetch with an article of clothing, etc.. Most of them are trying to play and for them it's just a game and you're the chew toy. Until something else becomes more interesting.
