Never owned a ti seatpost before but thought about buying one of the J&L ti seatposts on ebay for $89.  What will I be missing compared to a moots/eriksen/dean ti seatpost?

I liked my Moots post, but it was expensive.

You're riding a steel bike, don't see that a ti post is going to do much for ride quality or looks.
I like ti bikes and own several with ti seatposts.
Can't tell any difference between the Moots or Thomson post ride.

I recall that bike although I don't remember it having a ti post.   Wink

thanks for the feedback.
From your comments it sounds like I would NOT expect to see a difference. I'm a little confused,  I thought that ti posts were supposed to flex and improve comfort - what am I missing here?  Is this ti seatpost benefit limited to a particular type of frame material?  If so, what material?

Depends on what you get.  I've got an Eriksen Sweetpost setback, 27.2, shimmed to fit my 31.6 seat tube- very nice ride.  If it was a straight 30.9 (the other size they make), it wouldn't flex nearly as much.  AKA if you want max flex, buy a smaller diameter, setback, and shim it to your frame.

Bought mine in Spring 2011....been on 3 different frames.  2 Carbon saddles.....

I think they make a very noticeable difference, and I won't ride without one anymore. Tried a carbon Niner post recently and took it off after one ride.

I had the Eriksen post on my N9 (steel frame) and it did make a difference.  Worth the cost?  Dunno, but I run a thomson now.  I also had a J&L from ebay and it made no noticable difference in ride quality.

Something like the Niner RDO post of Syntace Hiflex might be a better option...
