2x10 to a 1x set up

Newb? Interested in going from a 2-10 to a 1 x setup. If I wanted to get a feel for the range of a 1x10 what gears should I try to ride in on my 2 x? I currently have 36/22 front rings.

32 or 34 up front.  How is the 36 for you in Charlotte? Just judge based on how often you're in your granny gear now and then pick for what fits your fitness level and favorite trails. Don't worry about the math...it's just numbers that make you think you need something you don't.

Using the same cassette, the range will be the same using either single ring you have now.

Get a 32 ring.

You will also need a clutch type rear derailleur.

To answer your original question... I can show you a gear ratio chart for different 1x10 setups versus your current 2x10 setup, if you can provide the range of your current cassette (11-32? 11-34? 11-36?).

Keep in mind, the wider the cassette range, the more feasible a 1x10 will be.

What type of cranks are on the bike? Most Shimano cranks use a 104 mm Bolt Circle Diameter for the chainring bolts. That limits the minimum chainring size to a 32t. You can get a 30t (Raceface makes one) for a 104 BCD crank, but is it more pricey since the threads for the chainring bolts are integrated into the chainring itself.

You will definitely want a Narrow Wide chainring, and derailleur with a clutch. For that matter, is your current rear shifter/derailleur Shimano, or Sram? Shimano has a much better clutch mechanism (IMO).

I run a 32. I do not have a clutch rear derailleur and I have virtually no drops. The 32 is tough in the mountains, though.

Narrow wide Front Ring adds security for a NO Drop of the chain
Same with a Clutch Derailleur.

If your current drive train is worn out- its a great time to upgrade. - simplilfy = Its a great feeling throwing those Front LH Controls away!

32 T is the common front ring to run on a 1x

I just did this and used Shimano XT M796 Type 2 derailleur
with a 11/34 Rear cassette
32t race face

I did go ahead with the 42T One Up Low gear ( and in all honesty in Charlotte its NOT USED much at all ) take me to mtns or hills -and Ill use it. Effectively a 1x9 by not using the Oneup!

So, assuming you plan on keeping the same cassette, you would essentially lose your three lowest gear combinations, and your one highest gear combo.

I assumed an 11-36 cassette. The Y-axis is in speed rather than gear ratio to give the numbers more meaning. The speed is proportional to gear ratio, and assumes a 27.5" wheel pedaling at a cadence of 85 rpm.

If you currently have an 11-32 cassette, AND you switched to an 11-36 at the same time as going to 1x, the change would be less drastic and you would only lose your two lowest ratios, and your one highest ratio.

For those who are interested, here is a comparison between 2x10 vs 1x11 vs 1x12.... what can I say, I like graphs.

Avoid the step by step upgrade that I went through.  I first went from 3x10 to 1x10 by removing the front 3 rings and replacing them with a Narrow Wide 32T.  It was nice, but I soon wanted more range.  So...next I added a Wolftooth 42T in the back.  That gave more range, but shifting was a bit choppy where I had removed a middle gear to make room for it.

I finally just got the wallet out and went with a full Shimano M8000 1x11 setup.  New 11-42 cassette in the rear (Shimano XT CS-M8000), new XT 11 speed derailleur (Shimano XT RD-M8000) a new single rear shifter (Shimano XT SL-M8000) and a new chain (KMC X11-EL 11).  Best setup ever and I mean ever.

I just hate that I tried to penny pinch along the way with the other stuff. I sold it all on Ebay but I wasted some money for sure.

There will be some heavy 1x11 price dropping in June wkth the release of 1x12.  Give it a couple months and grab a 1x11 on the cheap and you won't have all the range issues. WOOT! Cool

I would agree, probably not worth "upgrading" the cassette and/or derailleur to accommodate a 1x10. If you are going to replace any of those components, you're better off going straight for the 1x11.

However, if you already have a clutch derailleur and an 11-36 cassette, all you would need is a NW chainring, which would carry over if you ever did decide to turn it up to eleven.

I've been enjoying the snappy shifting and new-found simplicity of converting a couple of bikes (3x10 and 2x10) to 1x10 recently - running a OneUp RADr cage (on Shimano clutched derailleur) and SunRace CSMX3 11-40/42t Cassette with a narrow/wide front chainring (32t on my 160mm bike, 36t on my 100mm bike) and shortened stock chain.

Cheers,
William
