Tick problems at WWC?
06/20/16 at 6:17pm
Print Post
I have been riding wwc 2-3 times a week for the last couple years. In my last few outings I have found ticks on me. I have never found any before.

So I was wondering if this is maybe "tick season", or perhaps a new section of land that has an issue.

I don't know much about ticks. Maybe in the past I was just extremely lucky to not find any on me or perhaps finding ticks on back to back rides was extremely unlucky.

I have never had any issues with ticks at all except for at rocky river and even then it was a rare occurrence.   It might be the new addition areas riding through the tall grassy areas.

Tall grass equals ticks. A weed eater will take care of the problem.

Ticks happen.

Spray your shoes and socks with permethrin. Allow to dry, then wear as usual (don't spray on your skin). They crawl on your shoes or socks, it kills them, dead, dead, dead before they crawl up your legs. What's left over makes a great household bug killer too.

Do this at the beginning of tick season. First of May or so. It will last through a few washings.

You can find it at REI or in sporting goods at Wally world. And put a little repellent on your exposed legs. I like Sawyer 20% Picaridin. It's just as effective as deet, doesn't damage your plastics and is reported to be safer than deet.

I used to use the same stuff on my camping equipment. Works wonders. You can actually watch it work. Also kept the bike and such from attracting spiders back when I had a shed which was nice.

Yep.

I live out in the weeds. I aint had one bother me in years.

Now I might not win many races. And I might not have the fanciest mountain bike around. But the bugs know I'm a bad man. They run when they see me coming.  Grin

I really enjoy spraying it on black widow spiders and watching them suffer. I figure you gotta draw the line somewhere.   Wink

Dude yes!

That was a terrible span of time working on that. Those things were the worst I ever came across haha.. Still itching haha

Im not a fan of spraying poison all over my body so I never use DEET or Permethrin...

Just check yourself everyday and you'll be fine.

Most ticks you find are wood ticks and are mostly harmless. Its the ones you can barely see, the deer ticks, that carry diseases. And even then they have to have been latched on you a while to cause issues.

If you are really worried wear long pants and long sleeves and light colored clothing so you can see them easily...

I've used lemon eucalyptus oil for mosquitoes and it works great. I have heard it works equally well for ticks.

Just rode East (all) and Academy yesterday. There were parts of the East extension(s), where the trail goes out into the more open field like areas, where the tall grass was unavoidable. I stopped to check myself after but didn't find any ticks on me. Guess I got lucky.

Academy has obviously been cut back recently in the section under the power lines (thread trail overlap), so no real issues there.

Side note... I LOVE Academy trail! Definitely a unique flavor for WWC. Love all the technical ups and downs with the short steeps, and off camber stuff. Really keeps your attention. Requires some judicious braking on the downs to stay out of trouble.

Man when they're bad they're bad...

I was sitting in the weeds on the river side the other week at N. Mills and had 3 on me in about 5 minutes. I just memorize every mole and freckle on my body so I can easily identify those suckers hahaha  Cheesy

I usually don't find them until the wee hours of the night when I'm awoken by them crawling across my legs. *shudders... I hate a dang tick.
