I'm 48 and have ridden Mtn bikes since '84. Followed the new advances as the have come along. Hard tail is great to learn on and really develop riding skills. FS has come so far now. I ride a Scott Genius and the on the fly lockout let's me keep up with my XC buddies but can still have as much fun as anyone on the trail (I just love to pop and drop wherever I can)!  The best thing about the Scott is how it goes from enduro to XC with a push of your thumb. Plus if you have any back issues, FS will help you out. Live it Extreme Bikes in Mooresville carry Scott and they give great deals!

You can buy a lot of FS bike for $3,000. Smiley  All good advice and it really does boil down to finding what works for you.  Try out different demos from different shops and see what you like.

I ride a Specialized Camber Expert Carbon 29er and love it for local riding.

After a couple of rides on the "XC" trails on the western slope of Masanutten Ski Resort I'm thinking a SJ FSR 650b might be in my future. Smiley
