So my wife and kids are heading north for a few weeks and I am solo, therefore looking to take advantage and visit some other spots I have never been.  Since moving to Charlotte I have only ridden the trails locally.  Was hoping you guys may have some good suggestions on places to go.  Thinking everything from Asheville trails, Boone, Warriors Creek in Wilkesboro and on and on.  So what would you guys recommend a few hour drive at most?  Intermediate rider that prefers trails with tons of flow.

Hard to beat Warrior Creek.  If you're up for a good bit of saddle time you can hit that, OVT and Dark Mountain all in one day.  I went about three weeks ago but only got OVT and Warrior Creek done.

Nice!!

Based on how you describe the riding you want, I'd 2nd Dupont.

OVT has IMO the best flow in the state. With the new additions an out and back trip is now 25 miles.

Thanks for the responses.  It looks like either Warrior Creek/OVT, Bent Creek or Dupont.  I worry about the traffic at Bent Creek on the wknds though.  Actually what out of these gets the most traffic......any idea?

Agreed.  Very flowy, one of my husbands favorites.  Hadn't been in some time but went recently & rode a lap on Dark Mtn first, followed by OVT.  That new Horton's Hollar/Berry Mtn is pretty sweet.  (We hit it on the way out, Shiners on the way back.)

My opinion; Bent Creek, followed by DuPont, then WC/OVT.  But could vary any given weekend.

I think Bent Creek is one of the busiest, given close proximity / convenience to Asheville.

DuPont gets a lot of (car) traffic, but it's multi use.  Parking lots can be overflowing, but you only run into small groups on the trail.  With ~80 miles of trail, you can be on some lesser known ones with little to no traffic.

WC/OVT are easier to navigate first time or two.  Once "in", just follow the trail.  Both Bent Creek & DuPont use gravel roads to connect loops.  Best to go with someone familiar or get a map.  But don't let that deter you if you're up for exploring.  You can always ask someone passing by for directional assistance.

i'd recommend Warrior Creek.  it's easy to get to and lots of fun for a solo trip.  approx 13mi if include Headwater Loop (highly recommended, very technical lines to navigate after the fun flowy main trails).

Rocky Knob in Boone is fun too, but a little short if you're wanting a full day. the middle "Stone Binge Skills area" is a good spot to take time to play around in as there are lots of tech trail features to repeat.

have fun!

Lake James State Park is worth checking out.  15 miles of very flowy purpose built trails that are similar to Lake Norman.  Bent Creek is good on weekends, the further from the trailheads you get, the fewer folks you will see.  Just a heads up, as of 7/20/16, there are numerous trees down throughout the Bent Creek system, hopefully we will have most of them cut out by this Saturday afternoon.  Also, it seems that the folks at Warrior Creek, OVT, and Dark Mtn are dealing with numerous blowdowns.

Lake James is pretty fast and fun, I agree! Fun to hit on the way to Brevard/Asheville.

Great feedback thanks all.  Never heard of Lake James State Park but I love Lake Norman so this is nice new discovery as well!

Warrior and OVT are amazing trails.... We are very fortunate to have them so close....I however would prefer DuPont the trails are awesome.... You can put together a fairly fun 20-22 mile loop with ease.. And..... When your are done there are several great places to kick back and relax, The Hub, Oskar Blues,Sierra Nevada and many others.... North Wilkesboro has an Applebee's...

Interesting to see the variety of responses.  I've ridden just about all the trails possible for a day trip.  My 2 cents is if you like the Charlotte Trails then Warrior/OVT is your next adventure.  Rocky Knob (Who really enjoys the climb to the top of Ol' Hoss) is cool but you need to be a strong climber and descender to get the most out of the trail.  You need a guide at Pisgah (my best mountain bike stories come from Pisgah...and my worst) or a lot of exploring time to find a trail "favorite."  DuPont is way cool (Ridgeline for me is the best descent in the area that all can ride) and a little easier to navigate than Pisgah (but for me I still prefer Warrior and OVT for a day trip).  The moral of the story is we are very fortunate to have a variety of trails.  If I wanted an adventure AND wanted t make sure I didn't get over my head I'd go with Warrior/OVT.
Sorry...forgot to give some love to Uwharrie and Bent Creek (I just enjoy exploring Pisgah and DuPont more)....and Poston is always open.

My last thought is.....Have you tried Rocky River?  No need to travel looking for an adventure when the adventure here!
