"Booby traps were found on Bennett's Gap Trail in the Pisgah National Forest on 7/24/16 between 12-2pm. Logs, rocks, and roofing nails were placed on trail to intentionally harm/damage mountain bikers and their property. These actions are considered felonies/assault and can result in serious injury or even death to bikers. Please look out and report any future incidents."

Heard about this monday...

Apparently they made a number of rock piles in blind corners in the middle of the trail as well.

Keep you heads up out there folks. tacks and nails arent "life threatening" but whos to say what may come next...

Scary stuff. Angry

Ok. So I get that some people do not agree that bikes should be on the trails. That is their opinion.

What I will never understand is that "they" are dumb enough to deface and destroy the nature that "they" think "they" are protecting.

Just to offer some backstory on this, a section of Bennett that has been seasonal (closed to bikes Apr15th-Oct15th) was recently opened to bikes on a year round basis.  This trail is popular with the shuttle crowd (as well as other users) as it is accessible top to bottom by vehicle VIA a gravel road.

Even when it was on-season, hikers were sometimes indignant and argumentative.  Just a small portion halfway down the trail was actually seasonal, and there was a lot of confusion there.

That said, I never expected this kinda thing, being that the forest service okay'ed it.

Have any of the Charlotte trails had this kind of stuff done to them? BYT had bridges cut so they fell in when ridden on and fishing line/barb wire strung between trees. Forgot about a bunch of trees hinged and pushed into the trail. I hope the person or persons in Pisgah get busted. If some of my friends who live up their catch them it will be bad news for them.

I'm going to guess that the ideological dichotomy inherent in such an act is lost on someone dumb enough to opt for the "Parti-Colored" thumb tacks when booby-trapping natural terrain. The irony, of course, is that almost every trail I've ever ridden was built and maintained by mountain bikers for mountain bikers. Never saw a hiker at a workday. Except once, on a BYT workday maybe 5 years ago we came across 2 or 3 fifty somethings walking little dogs and pulling/piling brush across the trail to discourage riding. Scott handled them calmly and politely, from what I remember, while I (to keep the apt Pulp Fiction references going) was like "Go get me a pair of pliers and a blowtorch..."

I was riding NM one evening and someone placed a large log in the dip below the ball field. I guess it was some kids from the ball games that was trying to get someone hurt. I stopped and removed it. It does happen everywhere.

This is a sick and crass society.

Even if you catch somebody in the act, I don't see them getting charged with anymore than vandalism or perhaps trespassing, unless somebody gets hurt. The penalties for engaging in this kind of stuff should be stiff.

When you ride in the woods, it's never a bad idea to wear your glasses.

The ones in Jersey seem particularly nasty and premeditated. Not so sure about the penalty not being harsh enough - if I found someone stringing barbed wire across a trail when I was riding... well, suffice to say we'd hold court right then and there.
