Geared bikes make you lazy

Just a general observation here, but coming from a single speed to a geared bike I find I'm much more lazy and way slower.  It's too easy to put it in a high gear and pedal away.  Single speed pretty much at least forces you to keep a decent pace

I would suggest, when winter is over, to try a unicycle it ha less friction and weight and so it will be even easier to ride.

Vikings only ride in the 10-19 cog ranges, all the others are for the fairies and berry pickers of the world

I think what John snow is saying, is coming from SS only to a geared bike makes you lazy. Coming from riding SS only for 6+ years, I have to say that I agree. Riding SS forces you to use your entire body more, especially your core. Just last year I bought two geared bikes, a CX bike, and a geared FS bike. Riding the geared bikes with so many different cadence and power options, my legs were really weak in some areas being conditioned to one gear only. While I feel that I benefit from riding the geared bikes, sitting and spinning made my core weaker. I have a chronically bad back, keeping my core strong is crucial to managing my back pain. Contrary to popular belief riding a singlespeed hardtail makes me a stronger rider, and overall stronger. Folks that have never spent any amount of time riding a SS bike may never know, and tha'ts ok, to each his own.

"Bad decisions" is the answer we were looking for, but you're on the right train of thought.

I ride a SS. My SS has 18 single gear combinations. I can ride in any one for however long I want. I can even get off the bike ,and walk the hills. My 18 Single Speed bike is the best Cool

If your slow your slow and if your fast your fast. Its all you. Thats whats great about cycling.

I was asking myself the same question.  If gears make you lazy then I'm loving being lazy!  Viva la derailluer!!!

Plus I always need one lower gear after the mid ride PBR break.

Remember either on geared or single speed, It is just a hill! Get over it! Then there usually is a decent! Dream of something magically waiting for you at the bottom to get your own gears going and you wont be lazy!
