Geared bikes make you lazy

Just a general observation here, but coming from a single speed to a geared bike I find I'm much more lazy and way slower.  It's too easy to put it in a high gear and pedal away.  Single speed pretty much at least forces you to keep a decent pace

I would suggest, when winter is over, to try a unicycle it ha less friction and weight and so it will be even easier to ride.

I think what John snow is saying, is coming from SS only to a geared bike makes you lazy. Coming from riding SS only for 6+ years, I have to say that I agree. Riding SS forces you to use your entire body more, especially your core. Just last year I bought two geared bikes, a CX bike, and a geared FS bike. Riding the geared bikes with so many different cadence and power options, my legs were really weak in some areas being conditioned to one gear only. While I feel that I benefit from riding the geared bikes, sitting and spinning made my core weaker. I have a chronically bad back, keeping my core strong is crucial to managing my back pain. Contrary to popular belief riding a singlespeed hardtail makes me a stronger rider, and overall stronger. Folks that have never spent any amount of time riding a SS bike may never know, and tha'ts ok, to each his own.

I ride a SS. My SS has 18 single gear combinations. I can ride in any one for however long I want. I can even get off the bike ,and walk the hills. My 18 Single Speed bike is the best Cool

I was asking myself the same question.  If gears make you lazy then I'm loving being lazy!  Viva la derailluer!!!

Plus I always need one lower gear after the mid ride PBR break.

Remember either on geared or single speed, It is just a hill! Get over it! Then there usually is a decent! Dream of something magically waiting for you at the bottom to get your own gears going and you wont be lazy!

This guy gets it!  You'd have to ride a SS to really understand

And I agree it can't all be blamed on the bike, the laziness does partially come from within but the gears are ENABLERS to the slower easy riding.  Without the option it's not a choice!

I've been a SS masher for the last 4-5 years, but have gone back to gears within the last 2-3 months.  SS will make you stronger, but it's up to the individual to carry that strength back over to gears if they choose to. The easy button is just that, it allows the rider to make a climb a little easier as far as for muscle strain, but the cardio kicks it up a notch if you choose that route so you better have the lungs for it.  There is always reaction to any action.  Mash it if you want to, or find your happy gear and pedal to the top.  Either way, as Rocky says, RAMFB!!!

Yep, I find it's just the opposite.

With the geared bike I work harder and go faster.

Single speeds need to be geared low to climb. Which causes them to be geared too low in the flats and downhill.

Since switching the SS to a 1x10, I often find myself climbing in a lower gear that I did before. And I can't dispute that it's nice to have a higher gear, so I don't feel like I'm twisting the pedal or my foot off climbing up some of the steeper hills.

It's just a different style of riding. I'll admit it's different getting used to sitting in the seat and peddling in the appropriate gear, and not relying so much on momentum and staying out of the saddle. But it's not required, and it's still a single speed anytime I choose. Of course, with a slight weight penalty.

Maybe John and Bossy will develop a little empathy when they hit their 60's. I learned on a SS prolly 50# steel bike. Have tried the SS route at 60 years old. Knees did not like it. I have gears and a suspension. Still work so cannot get in all the riding I want. With my current schedule I am lucky to get in a thousand miles a year. Maybe I am lazy. Maybe I should give the bikes away and watch fooball on TV.
Not bloody likely! Hope to be riding in 10 years at age 76.

Maybe Jon needs to ride with Enoch to find out how lazy those gears make you... I believe the carve/crave?/? (can't remember which) that Enoch rides has a 3x10 drivetrain. Just saying!  I believe most would agree he is far from lazy.

Maybe this is what Jon is looking for..... advice!   Ride your gear bike like your SS,  just because you have gears doesnt mean you cannot still mash it, you just have more gears to pick from to mash it on certain terrain, and when your on flat areas you can really crush it with gears!  Just ride it aggresively. And if SS is really in your dna, do what you like and have fun!

As a side note, i take it no luck on your stolen bike Jon?

I used to have a SS. I called it a BMX bike and a beach cruiser. So I guess having gears for over 40 years has made me lazy. Dam I knew it had to be something holding me back!

I like a SS on the trails around Charlotte, but don't think it would work at Snowshoe. I don't get to ride much anyway with all the trees I've been working on. I'm almost finished with the chipper and then I can ride again.

NOPE, bike never showed back up  Sad Sad Sad  Hence the change to geared and what sparked this observation.

You can definitely mash it with gears too, it's just that with the ss it's more of a PEDAL OR DIE situation and the gears promote making it easier for you.  That's the whole reason they're made right?  To give mechanical advantage and lessen the work load on your body?  It's more or less a fact that the body and brain prefers the easy way out so the natural choice will be to ease up.  You just have to really work to put the same effort in on a geared bike.

And I'm not knocking geared bikes at all, it's what I'll be on now indefinitely.   This was just the largest change in riding I noticed a few rides in.

I alternate between geared and SS every couple of months.  I find it much more "difficult" making the transition from geared to SS vs. the transition from SS to geared.

I'm always faster on my single speed than geared bike.  If I rode the geared bike like I ride the single it would be faster but it is too easy to downshift.

Maybe Jon needs to ride with Enoch to find out how lazy those gears make you... I believe the carve/crave?/? (can't remember which) that Enoch rides has a 3x10 drivetrain. Just saying!  I believe most would agree he is far from lazy.

Jerry also rides a single speed faster than most and often.

If I only rode in Charlotte = I would ONLY own 1 bicycle = the SS.
No Tuning, no gears clacking, no deraliur smackin makin noise
Wash - Lube +air in tyres and ride = Simple.

Since i also ride in the mtns= and other areas that are not enjoyable to be stuck in 32 x 18 I also have geared machines. I do have to 'remember" to downshift when on the geary squishy bike. Rather than MASH OUT that climb.

More KOM's are achieved on SS  - Its a fact.

I get what the OP is saying.  It is really hard to resist hitting that shifter once you start to suffer.

Riding my SS makes me stronger on my 1x11.

Rode my geared squishy for the first time last night after about a month of nothing but SS and almost fell asleep on the thread trail.  Lazy, I would venture to say snoozy.

Ok, I decided to check this out today on my geared hard tail.

On my geared bike on average I ride in a lower gear than I did on my rigid SS.

Only on the occasional upgrade or steep hill do I shift into my old SS combination or perhaps one gear above. I still only use 3 or 4 gears max on area trails. Yes, I still stand on the pedals and pump out the hills just like I did with my SS.

Maybe it's because I spent so much time riding an SS that makes me less likely to shift gears or sit in the seat and peddle the spinny gear. I don't feel lazy.  Smiley

I have bad knees.  I either sit down and sissy spin or I sit on the couch.  I feel I'm still WAY more productive doing the first option.  Ride what YOU enjoy most. Wink

This thread has inspired me to get off my lazy butt more often and mash up the climbs like I used to, rather than just dropping gears (and speed) and spinning it out.

To be honest, it feels good to get my whole body into the effort of pedaling hard. Also, felt like I had a little more finesse on some of the techy climbs. Since I was already out of the saddle, it was easier to maneuver the bike around underneath me, and shift my weight around to make last second line corrections. I surprised myself a little with how quickly I could get up some of the climbs on East Main and Academy yesterday.

I'm still not giving up my gears any time soon, but sometimes I need to remind myself that I don't always have to drop gears as the trail gets steeper.

I would agree. Which is why I am not about to give up my gears.

I would also make the assertion that when in the "proper" gear the average human body can put down more power when out of the saddle, than when seated. Especially when riding flats (which I do).

Not to say that it is a more efficient use of one's limited energy, only that peak power output is higher when standing.

That's sort of like saying a Toyota 4 cylinder will out climb a V-8 Chevy.

And If you can pedal that fast, more power to you.  Smiley

Riding a geared bike doesn't by default make everyone lazy. There have been times when riding SS I've thought "man, it'd be nice to be able to shift right now" and times when riding geared that I've wondered what gear I "should" be in or ended up spinning faster or slower than "optimal." As long as you're out shredding and having fun who cares? I personally think that riding una velocidad can make you a better rider by teaching you to focus, use technique and carry momentum rather than figuring out what gear to pick and relying on brakes when not needed - what other choice do you have? People that haven't owned or ridden SS should give it a try if they can, it's surprising how much fun it can be. Riding a geared bike without shifting is not the same. I know this from following SS'ers while geared and having geared riders follow me saying "I'll stay in one gear" just doesn't work. Personal preference and to each their own. Most SS riders have ridden geared but I'm not so sure about the other way around. Don't knock it until you've tried it. Rode my geared full squish for the first time in probably 6 months or more and had fun being able to "click click". I'm just as if not more whopped so I guess that makes me lazy. That's fine I guess it's what I get for riding short-track on a bike marketed to tackle anything. I'd best get out and ride anything on anything again ASAP.

EDIT - Gramma.
What if I told you it doesn't matter, and have fun regardless of opinions.
p.s 26" ain't dead.

Gears, disc brakes (hydraulic or cable), 29/27.5" wheels, and suspension all make you lazy...

When I saw this post I thought to my self ‘Oh man, another entertaining post where people can brag about how hardcore they are for riding single speed.’ Secretly, though,  I have always been interested in single speeds. So, to understand where these guys are coming from I took my GT FS 30 geared 26er and locked the gears in a close to 1:2 gear ratio, moved my shifters from finger reach and went to the WWC. I did south, carpet, tower 93, wedge, goat hill, slalom, and east. It changed everything. It changed the way I rode, the way I climbed, I had to focus on the rocks and roots even harder and having to ratchet crank like never before. It was, also, nice to coast and enjoy the straights and downhills more sense I wasn’t able to power through them at high gear. It was like riding for the first time after year on new trails. The new challenge and level of difficulty made me want more.

In conclusion, I ordered the parts to convert one of my hard tails to a single speed. I plan on using it for local rides and training. My FS bike will be for the adventures, races, new trails, and lazy days.

One thing I noticed when stomping my body weight on the pedals when going on the ups, not having my butt on the saddle as usual it was much harder to gain traction on the roots and loose rocks. what do you guys do about this? I’ve tried shifting my weight back, wheelies, using my momentum. Maybe its just part of the challenge and fun.

I did shift to a slightly wider tire for No Name, but no more than a 2.25 so not a big change.  Otherwise, I just extend my arms to keep my weight back on the steep stuff like No Name.  You'll get used to it.

Get a bigger wheeled bike. There's a reason why most SS's are 29ers.

And like you say, concentrate more on keeping up your momentum.
On geared bike, the time you'd normally be downshifting before an uphill, you need to be hammering on the SS. You will climb faster on the SS, but at a cost of endurance.. Because most people with gears don't punish themselves.

And pay close attention to your standing body position. As upright over the rear wheel as possible. Arms straight, front wheel unloaded. Your form will start to suffer on the steep stuff..., get ready to walk and it never hurts to say a prayer that you don't bust a chain, peddle, etc..

On my 650b hardtail, I can never get the traction standing and pumping in a single gear that I can downshifting and staying in the seat which keeps more weight over the rear wheel. It doesn't seem to be as much of a problem on my 29r. I think it's part geometry, and the larger tire contact patch because of the bigger wheel. Simply put, you can put more force to the pedals out of the seat.

Which one climbs faster? Whichever bike you can climb the hill in the lower gear. With the SS, you have no choice. And if the hill is steep enough, you will be walking the bike. That's when you lose whatever advantage you might have had compared to the geared bike. The skill and legs of the rider are always major factors.
